Venting a fridge

Postby twin wheel camper » Tue May 29, 2018 6:13 pm

Can you put the outside fridge vents on the side behind the sliding door? I know it would be better to not do this but if I have to will it get enough air circulation with the side door open when parked up?
It’s a 3 way fridge and when parked up will be using gas for the fridge but am worried with the side door open the fridge might not get cooled enough.
There is a cap of only around 2 inch’s between the door and the side of van, anybody fitted a fridge the same way??

No - I gas fridge MUST vent externally. My 12v compressor fridge vents internally by the sliding door. But that's a different animal.

No I’m planning on cutting the holes in the side of the van for the proper vents but my worrie is when you are parked up on you jolly days  will the fridge be ok with the side door partly blocking the air to the back of the fridge??

You could always fit computer fans to aid circulation heat wise...
A floor vent and 'chimney' out the roof would also be fine
(critical bit is keeping the combustion flue withing manufacturers specs to maintain correct disposal of combustion gases)

I gave up long ago and bought a variable speed compressor type Waeco....
Far less fussy and dangerous....
Currently 2 years in running none stop from solar and Durite VSR never using hook up.

Having the fridge behind the door should be okay. The gap between the door and body will be bigger than the vents, and the door will keep direct sunlight off that part of the van.

Thanks that what I was hoping for but still haven’t committed to layout yet but that is at least a option.
My van is also a smiley twin wheel high cube like yours so the modified door runner for the dual rear also helps the way it keeps the door slightly further out from the van side.

I'm considering making a small windbreak to either stand around the vents or clip into the vents to promote cooler airflow from under the camper.

I was parked up in leipzig a few weeks ago, the fridge side was sheltered from the sun by a fenceline with plastic sheeting on it. The fridge got down to -1¤c whilst on gas!

I've already got a computer fan behind, but I think unless the air is deliberately funnelled up the back and out of the top vent then there's too much free air space behind to make a difference.

I feel some experimenting is called for.

They do work, fitted some last week and I only have the hole for the fridge flue - need to cut some fridge vent holes, but that can wait till I have an engine.
