Retrofit leisure charger in mk5 Camper

Postby npjrogers » Fri Sep 25, 2020 2:17 pm

We have a mk5 smiley with alternator based split charging leisure battery. I would like to install a 6 to 8 amp ‘floating type’ battery charger for use when hooked up. Also to maintain leisure battery during the winter. We already have 240V hookup with proper trip and switch arrangement. The leisure battery is under the hood left side front. Should we
a) get a portable battery charger with croc clips and plug into the onboard mains socket. (Can we still run this on a site when using 12v power)
b) locate and fit the charger permanently and wire into the leisure battery and the onboard 240v circuit.
c) another far better idea that I dont have the wit to figure out without help from this forum :D
Thanks for any advice or thoughts..

If it was mine I’d fit a battery charger inside the van and wire it up to the leisure battery
