Could I get away with having a fold out sink/cooker top from the boot of my van?

My van has already been converted without permanent cooking or washing facilities, and without ripping all the old stuff out, it's the easiest way of doing it.

Well, I tried to re-register mine as motorcaravan as it had all the neccesary requirements only for the DVLA to send me a letter including the following;

"DVLA is required to record the details of vehicles for road safety and law enforcement purposes. The body type information held on the vehicle record must describe what a vehicle actually looks like. This description, in addition to other distinguishing features, enable Police and other enforcements agencies to identify a particular vehicle.

Apart from the internal changes, the vehicle remains in essence as it was constructed by the manufacturer albiet with side windows added and basic, minimal facilities associated with a motor caravan. Vehicles of this type are generally 'multi use' vehicles and can be converted for the purpose of the current keeper.

Whilst you have converted the vehicle for your own use and may consider the vehicle to be a motor caravan, it is our opinion that the vehicle cannot be identified externally as a motor caravan and the body type description, for the purpose of our record, cannot therefore be changed to show motor caravan.

The body type description 'Van with side windows' is the only body type description at our disposal to best describe how the vehicle looks externally."

Something wrong here.

"it is our opinion that the vehicle cannot be identified externally as a motor caravan"

"The body type description 'Van with side windows' is the only body type description at our disposal to best describe how the vehicle looks externally"

Why would they say that?.... Motorhomes look exactly like vans with windows anyway.... What do they expect your conversion to look like?

My motorhome and every other panel-van conversion looks exactly like a van with windows..... but its not a van with windows... its a motorhome.... because its what's inside the van makes it a motorhome.

I'd get onto them.

Well, I called them today, the guy brought up my van details, I explained about the letter I'd recieved which he said he had a copy of, then he went on to say that the van details had been changed last Friday to a Motorcaravan/Caravan. So I says,"You say that the registration book has been changed to show that it is now a Motorcaravan but that you have also sent me a letter to say that you can't change it?" "That's right!" he replies. Doh!

Another thing to watch out for is the road tax, i converted a 17 seater minibus but needed to use it before sending off log book so i taxed it as a bus which i think is cheaper. anyway when i sent log book they sent it back unchanged but accepted it had been coverted with a letter saying i needed to take tax, logbook, and letter to local office and re tax before they would change the log book to motorcaravan.

Just a little more they said that the motorhome needs a toliet in it to be a real motorhome ,We never put one in as we always use toliets at camps as we do not want it going around with us everywhere and also we need the space for sleeping. Can anyone tell me why its ok for a vw camper to have no toilet and water but its not ok for a transit ???

Not seen that one before on any of the forums. I know lots of motorhomes that don't have toilets. Weird.

hi, all

dont think i bother to do change my minibus to camper van at the mo
wait till dvla have got there act together

! at the mo, my log book states minibus with no seats

!i wonder if i paint in big letters on the side of my van this is a camper van
it would help in getting re/registered

copied this of camper van life
Update: March 2011 - Many people applying to have vehicles re-registered as "Motor Caravans" with the DVLA are being refused, as their vehicle does "Not look like a motor caravan from the outside". The DVLA are then re-classifying the vehicles as "Vans with windows". Apparently this is a problem for the Police and other authorities, who cannot identify converted vehicles easily from the outside. This page will be updated when new information is confirmed.
