Mark 6 350 conversion

Postby bocean02 » Wed Jun 01, 2011 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd post my progress on here for peoples interest, maybe some advise and more to the point I figured that it will motivate me to keep at it! I have been using this van for work which has been deliveries, courier, light moves and similar but have got myself a new jumbo so decided to build a stealth camper. I will be able to rip out the camper interior quickly so I can still use it as a van for work. This Transit was a refrigerated van until yesterday, it took me all day to remove the fiberglass/ply/insulated lining. The fiberglas molded the whole of the inside as one so it was great fun to remove. Not. I had to degas and remove the refigeration motor from the ceiling first then using an angle grinder, jigsaw, crowbar and a sledge hammer eventually got the rest out. I have given the the inside a good clean which felt good afterwards, super dirty to brilliant white, ooooo the satisfaction :)

Today I got some ply and osb for my new interior which I have so far cut the floor to shape and a short bulk head. I used the osb for this, it's 11mm. I will be fitting the ply (5.5mm) when I find someone to give me a hand to fit the insulation. I will fit cord carpet on the walls and ceiling and a vinyl carpet on the floor when ready.

As the van was a fridge van beforehand there is a electric input on the outside wall of the van which I will be using for power when on a site. Handy :) I am no electrician so will be keeping things simple but I know that I need an inverter, a leisure battery and a one way unit thing for a charge from the altenator. ( Don't know what it's called but it prevents the motor being powered by the leisure battery but still sends a charge ).

I was thinking of putting a window in it but since I will be using it for work, maybe it's not a great idea. I do however want light and ventilation so have been thinking skylight. There is a big sky light shaped portion on the rear section of the roof, does anyone know if there is a sky light available to fit in that space?

Any advise is much appreciated :)

I'll stick some pics below. Ok so I will when I know how! How do I post pics?

Cheers

If you press return between each photo link they will appear one below the other, instead of side by side, I have fixed your original thread

Thanks for the photo help :) Can I make the pics smaller on photobucket?

I have been at it all day today although it doesn't look like I have made much progress, I can assure you I have! Cables have been run, walls have been cut, headaches have been had. Here's some more pics, fairly self explanatary.

Any constructive critisism is very welcome :)

Yes. You can set the upload size or edit them one by one afterwards but your's are the perfect size.

Hello good work so far, the only thing i would say is have a go at the rust on the inner wheel arches as if your planning on keeping the van, i redid my ply last year and had the same rust area cheers.

I thought the same thing so geve it a clean and hammerite respray before I screwed the floor down. Hopefully that'll help.

I really need some advise on Sky lights, I won'y be fitting the ceiling until I know what I'm doing but I don't have a scoob! On ebay there seems to be massive caravan windows or little cheap crappy ones, is there a happy medium?

Starting to take shape now although I got carried away and carpeted the walls before making the wheel arch boxes. oops.

Quite chuffed with the finish :) Definitely worth the extra pennies getting nicer sockets and switches.

So it's getting there. Money is tight now so it's fairly basic just now but great things to come in the future :)

I do hope you are not leaving the gas bottle exposed like that :?: It should be in an enclosure that is sealed from the interior of the van, ventilated through the floor to fresh air, and only accesible from outside the van.

The gas bottle is not anywhere yet, it's just sitting wherever it's put while I sort the van out. It's empty just now (for your piece of mind  ).

Where do you suggest I put it outside the van? I didn't realise it had to be accessed from the outside, that sounds like a ball ache.
