I'm viewing a 2004 2.4 tomorrow...

Postby Sanemancured » Wed Jan 03, 2018 6:46 pm

Hello there. I hope you don't mind a newbie coming in and asking for help straight away.

I'm Peter and I live in the Lakes. I'm off to view a Transit camper van tomorrow and I'm struggling to find the engine spec. It's a 2004 LWB 2.4 Duratorq and the seller isn't very mechanically minded. From checking the Gov MOT site and doing an Experion check it seems to be genuine and has only a bit over 20,000 miles on it.

I have an engine number that I need to match with the VIN but I'm unable to find the engine spec i.e. whether it's 75, 90 or 120 bhp. Is there a way to tell? I'd need it for insurance purposes (the insurer website gave 3 options) and also I'd think that Scotlands finest scenery may need more than 75bhp.

Anything else I'd need to check bar the obvious? I'm reasonably handy vehicle wise but no Transit expert. It's up for £12k and looks to be a really good conversion from the photos but he'll accept offers.

Campervans are so bloody expensive!

If so enter it into the vehicle tab on this site  www.etis.ford.com

Thank you.

Nope I don't have the full VIN just the engine number from Experia. I was going to check the VIN matched. The engine number is 4Y57318. No VIN given for some reason and no scrapped/stolen etc. either.

I'll take my overalls and get dirty.

I tried the etis site but as the van has a personalised Reg No it didn't recognise it. I then remembered that the original 54 Reg was on the Experia report. It gives:

Transit 2000-2006, Duratorq DI 2.4 (90PS), Diamond White 73
VIN Number: WF0LXXTTFL4Y57318

The engine number matches and I'll check the VIN tomorrow. Thank you. Hopefully the 90 hp engine will do the job.

I'll update. It could be a pile of poo. If the personalised Reg comes with the van it'll be worth a couple of bob, hmmmm.....

Originally we've been looking for a Romahome so a bit bigger :D

Well it’s pretty damn solid. Lots of surface corrosion but nothing structural. It needs a professional under seal to extend its life. Engine is just like you’d expect a 22,000 motor to be, clean and quiet. The conversion is professional. We’re about to make an offer.

Yes Ned. Collect it tomorrow. We've booked a professional undersealer and I'll do a full service including all oils. I may be looking for advice. I'm pleased, the wife is quite excited :)

The 90ps TDDi is a good solid engine, but if you fancy a little more power, you should consider a holiday down South, and fit in a visit to Vantuner in West London.
He's an absolute whizz with these engines, and will give you a lot more grunt to help with pulling that camper around  :D 8)
