The Mk7 was a great van no doubt, but the Mk8 is way superior. Quiet, smooth and superbe to drive. Quite frankly I don't know how they make a diesel van that quiet and smooth.
I have an L3H3 155bhp Trend. I would say that 155 is sufficient but I wouldn't want a less powerful engine. Power is good but you have to work it, and there's nothing at all before the turbo kicks in about 1.5k RPM, so you have to use the gears carefully. That takes some getting used to after the Mk7.
Quoted fuel economy figures are optimistic to say the least - 36mpg average!!! Driving reasonably carefully with half payload I get just under 27 mph - but then that's roughly what I got from my Mk7 so not complaining.
Not had it long enough to comment on reliability/durability.
Hope that helps.
