If you want automatic, it may require loud repeated requests to Ford

Sprinter owners in the USA complained for years about a lack of 4x4, they get it in 2015.

I do not understand why manual is so predominant in that market.

It might be that it is cheaper to produce and satisfy warranty claims on a manual.

Automatic is standard in the USA and I doubt it is much more expensive to buy.

The engineering work is already done, so it might just be that nobody is complaining for it.

In USA they have completely different engines, and automatic transmission boxes and control is designed for this engines. Their engines have big power and gigantic torque. This boxes are not for European... gnats.

What it is in Europe automatic transmission with tdci diesel (integrated electronic control) - knows for ex. Mondeo owner - especially if it is broken and nobody know, what happened...

1. Engine 2,2 tdci in Mondeo it is not the same engine as 2,2 tdci in Transit. Transit engine it is Puma, Mondeo it is PSA DW. Engines have different electronic control units and injection systems. They have only the same brand name - TDCI...
2. Forget 3,2 tdci Puma in Transit - now it is... 3,2 POWER STROKE and is produced in South Africa.

2.2[edit]
In 2005, Ford introduced the Duratorq ZSD-422, a 2.2 L (2184 cc) turbodiesel for top-of-the-range versions of the Mondeo and Jaguar X-Type which produced 155 PS (153 hp/114 kW). This is unrelated to the PSA DW12 2.2 unit used in Peugeot and Citroën applications.

Applications:

Ford Transit
2005–2007 Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi 155, 155 PS (153 hp/114 kW) and 262 lb·ft (355N·m)
2005–2009 Jaguar X-Type
2011- Land Rover Defender
2011- Ford Ranger T6 & Mazda BT-50 2.2 TDCi 110 kW & 375Nm

It is not true - in Transit is ONLY Puma. I think - they write about Puma engines:

TDCi 16v ZSD ("Puma") 2.0 L (1998 cc)
2.2 L (2198 cc)
2.4 L (2402 cc)
2.5 L
3.0 L 1999–present I4 turbo intercooled 16-valve DI Ford Mondeo, Ford Transit, Jaguar X-TYPE, LDV, London Taxi TX1, TXII, Citroen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Fiat Ducato & Land Rover Defender

Yes, because it is... Puma.

Look for main table "Engine reference" in link to Wikipedia...

HDi/TDCi PSA DW 2.2 L (2179 cc) 2005–present I4 turbo intercooled 16-valve Mk IV Mondeo, Ford S-Max, Ford Galaxy, Peugeot 407, Peugeot 4007, Peugeot 607, Citroën C5, Citroën C6, Citroën C-Crosser, Land Rover Freelander, Mitsubishi Outlander, Range Rover Evoque

Wikipedia sometimes... lies.

2.2L Duratorq TDCi ("PUMA" ZSD-422) diesel engine (88 kW & 285Nm; 92 kW & 330Nm or 110 kW & 375Nm) consumes as little as 7.6 L/100 km[9] (37.2 mpg-imp or 30.9 mpg-US) with choices of 6-speed manual or automatic transmission

this must be wrong as well then

I just ordered new Transit L2H3 2,2 diesel and also asked when the automatic transmission is available for European market. Local dealers said that will take 1 year, so in eof 2016

How can it be so hard to do it ?

Most people in the US don't know how to drive a "shift", so manual (as we call it) wouldn't sell.
Also, look at the spec - the same van over there has an engine with a cubic capacity about double what the EU models have - down to fuel prices, and expectations. Many of them are petrol as well.
A van the size of an L3 H3 would be laughed off the forecourt over there if it had a 2.2 litre motor!
That said, on recent visits to the US, I have seen, like for like, more of the new Transits on their roads than on ours.
