New MK8 transit

Postby RWG Contracts » Sat Apr 30, 2016 7:21 am

I've just ordered the new mk8 transit, long wheel base high top, L3 H3 I think, trend model with alloys, well top spec really. Never thought to read on here first though :( all the threads seem to be about problems with them, is there anything good?

Well she arrived the other week,

L3 H3 170 bhp euro 6 engine

Didn't want to post about it straight away, wanted to use it a bit before I commented.

I've had a mark 6 for the last few years as I preferred it to the mark 7's that my staff drive so moving to the mark 8 seemed quite luxurious

First impressions was it was great, absolutely unbelievable quiet, seemed to have plenty of power about.

Towing the trailer with it again it's good, that anti sway that they include with the towbar pack really does work, when driving in strong winds i notice it most

I do 60% of my driving with a 18' tri axel trailer on and I'm averaging 23.6 mpg which I'm very happy with

Biggest fault with it is reverse gear. It seems to be really high geared in reverse. And when on site constantly slipping the clutch to back up with trailer on.

Also the awful adblue door catch broke as soon as I got it home, I've glued that shut for now till ford get there act together and think of a new idea for the adblue door

But overall I'm very happy with it.

Well smart. :D

I think I would have gone with a towing diff though, much less stress on the powertrain with a trailer attached.
No Squire, not just any van....it has to be a Mk7 (VM.1) :D

Afternoon buddy. :D

It's a lower ratio axle.

Reverse gear will be high by virtue of the gearbox ratio....that will be further compounded by the ratio of your axle that determines the final drive ratio.

You will have a limited choice of ratios when you order a new van, the general "rule of thumb" is high ratio for motorway cruising & a lower ratio for towing. 8)

It sounds like it ticks all other boxes so I'd try living with it....if you experience short service life of the clutch/dual mass flywheel I'd be asking the dealership why you've not received better advice regarding axle ratios - taking into account you've ordered a factory towbar & anti-sway control.

Pulled a 3 tonne mini digger (yes I know I was over weight, shhh) with it the other day and to be honest I was very happy, I think it's something I'll get used to. Loads of power though and engine seems to be getting more touquey everytime I use it
