Underbody Rust!

Postby tisnart » Sun Sep 18, 2016 1:51 pm

Hi all

I have a 2014 MK8 Transit minibus, and to my horror it has developed rust underneath. It's all over the metal undercarriage including exhaust. I took it to the dealer but they said they could not repair it under warranty. I think a number of seaside visits (prior to me buying it) are the cause but I'm still shocked that it's as bad it is. It's not gone through but seems surface level at the moment.

I just wanted advice on how to proceed now that the dealer has refused the repair under warranty.

Thanks

I've noticed under my custom is no protection bar a slither of underseal on contact areas, I'm working on the front end and there is nothing just original primed metal and waxoil has been sprayed into the crevices of the bodywork box sections.

Very poor and I'll be addressing that with a large amount of underseal :?
Not much help to you but it is ridiculous isn't it.

Wash once a year and spray oil mixed with waxoyl, should keep rust at bay.

It's such a shame because I am otherwise very pleased with my Mk8. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tackle the existing rust?

I've done a Google search but majority of fixes seem to apply to old cars. Mine has less than 20k miles on it and is in excellent condition overall. I don't want to seal in the rust so was thinking wire brush off and seal?

Wire wheel on a grinder, rust treater, red oxide or etch primer then the choice of finish you want

Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 would be my choice of rust killer/primer, but it's a lot of effort to prep the devil plus paint/consumables when 5 liters of clear or black tetrosyl wax oil for 20 quid will sort it.

For exhausts/headers/calipers etc. Calyx is the hounds nads.

Engine oils tend to shag rubber/synthetic bushes, brake flexi hoses etc. and will just collect grime.

I have just undersealed my new Transit. I used Bilt Hamber Dynax S50.
I applied with a compressor fed spray gun. lovely stuff, goes on nicely and dries to a soft brown wax like finish. got it in all the box sections to give it a fighting chance!
Doesn't have a really strong odour which is nice. Has good ability to "creep". 5lt was enough to give the underside and door cavities a good coating.
Not cheap but a quality product IMO.

By way of an update:

I took it to a mechanic friend of a friend and he's said its nothing too much to be worried about. He can easily take off the rust, which is surface only, and will even do a full underseal at a good price, so I'm very happy.

Taken from the Ford website

A long anti-perforation warranty for extra reassurance

As a measure of the vehicle’s built quality, the Transit comes with a 12-year anti-perforation warranty as standard.

I've heard that fluid film is a good rust protection though a bit messy.
