Mk8 Back axil and Diff Lockers.

Postby otzi » Sat Jan 28, 2017 6:15 am

Does anyone know what model back axil is in the Mk8. Same or something new?
Has anyone figured out a diff lock fitment. Detroit auto locker maybe. Can one assume the US version has same axil. I am talking of the planetary gears here not the wheel drive axils.
Has there been any talk of 4x4 versions yet?

I was thinking that the esp brakes the side that loses traction, not good for racing purposes.
I know how diff lock works and lsd but I can't see why you'd want it on a transit unless you ate off the beaten track?

I have used transit vans for marshaling on car rally's from a mk1 upto a mk 6 over the last 35 years and have been stuck many times in the first mk3 I fitted a LSD to it I could get the van into places with it but often have to be towed out even tho it was also fitted with off road tyres.at the time the LSD cost me £475 to buy Witch was nearly haft the price of the van and was a total waste of money.the best van I ever had for off road was a mk3 190 twin wheel I only got it stuck once and then it only needed two marshals to push it out .so if I was going to buy a panel van to go off road a lot I'd go for a twin wheeler.

Fair enough but I have had nothing but success with my LSD, from the first day I bought the van I was doing things that would have had me stuck in my previous van, mud, snow, pulling mini tracked diggers out of river banks, pulling bay windows down, rescuing merc sprinters that are stuck on flat icy ground 3 in total I think, pulling Fiestas out off the ditch, reversing up steep gravel paths completely empty, oh and my personal favourites, wonderfully controlled power slides and getting across the junction before the guy next to me. Don't get me wrong, my brothers old mk3 twin wheeler was good too, we got a half ton boulder out off the ground and that was on grass!

Thanks for the replies. I'm intending to use the van for remote area fishing. Two wheel drive is just fine, 90% of the time, until it rains or there is a section of broken track etc. The cost of any diff app is/would be amortized by a remote rescue or two. (Australia). 4x4 (transit) would be like using a trailer when a barrow would do. Anyway, reliability has yet to be determined.

It seems that lockers don't rate highly on english must haves. If I must import any locker it would help if I knew the Mk8 axil is same as Mk7 etc.

i have been looking into a mk8 axle into my mk6, not sure if UK axles are the same, but a US axle is a 9.75 axle, and with that i can get ratios as tall as 3.08, and after market lsd, i spend a lot of time in the USA, and have shipped lots of cars and parts over the years, planning on having an axle built while out in the US this year, and ship it back, ebay has a place not a million miles from me (when i'm stateside) selling a couple of factory lsd axles with 3.73 ratio for $500 each, bit of an old thread, but hopefully some help to someone
