Diesel knock on cold mornings

Postby Damien89 » Sun Jan 29, 2017 6:31 pm

Hi guys, anyone with a mk8 has a diesel knock type sound coming from the engine on really cold mornings the first 5 minutes or till the temp needle starts to move? Mine has been like that since day 1 from new. On really cold mornings it has that doesel knock if given full throttle. Its had the injector learn done and its remained the same. It doesn't bother me much as long as it goes away when it gets a bit hot, but wanted to see if any is experiencing the same symptoms.

Yep mind does it also. Got mine 2 year old with 11k on the clock. Am going to get the dealership to look at when it goes in for it service. Along with the dodgy heated windscreen that has a mind of its own. Apart from that I look it. Great improvement over the Renault master I had. Now that was a proper tractor.

All diesel engines knock when not preheated and it's cold outside.

Depending on country and spec, maybe (and that you use it ofc).

There are two types.

Block heater and diesel/aux heater.

In my country the custom and mk7 comes/came with a diesel heater as standard.

Don't think you can buy a block heater from ford as an option.

You mean the glow plugs?

Yes, nearly every diesel have them but that doesn't change the knocking on cold.

A diesel have a high compression and heats up the air until it detonates with the fuel.
A cold engine, that will say when the block/cylinder walls are cold knocking occur.
Google it for a better explanation :)

Yes i know all about how diesel engines work, but its the first diesel i heard that produces that knock when cold and its rather loud. To me it looks like to much fuel is being injected during cold temps which should have been rectified from the factory by altering the fuel map during cold temperatures.

On the old DI,s for cold start the timing was advanced by a unit in the water system and a cable to a lever on the pump as the water heated up it let timeing retard back to the run position when cold some of them had a very bad diesel knock now it's probably advance by the computer that does it .the scania bus at work are very bad when cold ake says it's a diesel thing

Hello all
Mine knocks from cold up to 2500rpm then it's like turning a switch off as it stops.
When the temp gauge is up to operating temp it's a lot quieter
Its done it from day one and it's now done 215k.
