Are turbo failures on the 2.2 common?

Postby Damien89 » Fri Sep 22, 2017 9:28 pm

Here in malta all minibuses have had there turbo replaced under warranty due to the electronic actuator failing. Are these failures common in the uk?

I haven't read many, I'd propose that the heat and dust in Malta is the likely cause. :-)

Its the electronic actuator thats failing not the turbo itself.

Yes i know, the turbo can get white hot and as long as it isn't rusting to death or starved of oil then it should be fine.
The actuator is a little electronics box that has a motor and gears and a circuit board inside a plastic box which is located worryingly close to the extremely hot turbo, compounded by the fact that the weather in Malta is rather hot in summer and that (correct me if I'm wrong) but the makeup of Malta is largely volcanic rock type material and not much greenery and arid (hottest time of year anyway)

Which is why i supposed the failure rate you suggested could be so.

Uk egr valves tend to fail quite commonly and they are a similar setup in relation to the turbo actuator on the vnt.

Bloody Ford.

(The above assumes that the failure rate you stated is actually high and i have no corroborating into to go on)

I have had 2 Mk 8 vans, both had turbo failures before 20,000 miles and under warranty.
The last one packed in on the M6, blocking the particle filter so the engine died totally.
When recovered to the local dealer he told me he had THREE other Mk 8s in for the same issue!
So, yes, these failures do seem to be common!

My 2.2 minibus is having turbo issues - I'm 4 months out of warranty though.

at 1750 revs when under medium load it stutters then kicks into limp mode. Just trying to find a couple of quiet days where I can afford to take it out and have a look.

4 months out of warranty isn’t good have you asked for Gesture of good will to help with the cost.

Most probably its the actuator starting to fail.
