mk8 wont start

Postby fordv8racing » Fri Oct 20, 2017 1:09 pm

hi all, bought a 2014 mk8 jumbo in august, took it to transitmania 500 mile round trip no problems at all drove like a new van.
two days after returning went on holiday for 3 weeks left van outside workshop, on my return jumped in the van turned ignition all I got was half turn of the engine tired again got the same so thought batterys were down due to bing stood, charged batterys got the same again then when you turn the ignition nothing.
rang mechanic mate he said ill come and test it, tested it and said starter has gone, fitted new starter tried it turned over slow he said charge the batterys and try again, no different.
rang auto electrician he said he would test batteries both came up ok, he said try connecting a lead straight from battery positive and negative to the starter still the same.
mechanic came back and stripped and cleaned all positive and negative connections, still no different don't know what else to try anybody any ideas. if I had any hair I would be pulling it out.
cheers michael

Disconnect the glow plug relay, or disconnect the wire feeding them, and try again

You say you charged the battery – but was it FULLY charged?
I’ve managed to flatten my battery twice! (Kept opening and closing doors whilst I was fitting it out - and internal lights were staying on for ages).

Only way to solve the problem was to jump start from another van and left it running for a good 10 minutes. Haven’t had problem since although I am now more aware that lights and 12volt sockets stay live for a good 30 minutes once ignition switched off.

The difference is that you're removing the drain of the glow plugs from the starting circuit. If one or more has gone short circuit they can rob power from the starter :)

Have you checked the voltage while cranking?
