dash cam hardwire

Postby skeet » Mon Oct 23, 2017 11:17 pm

I've fitted a dash cam that does duty as a security camera while the van is parked.
It needs a permanent feed for this and I've wired it in at the radio plug.
It's just occurred to me that the rado goes off after an hour or so when the ignition is off.
Is this function within the radio or is it controlled by the ecu?

The radio should have two feeds. One permanent which keeps the settings live when the radio is off, and one ignition controlled one which turns it on and off via the BCM.

If you use the permanent one, you should be OK

The 'parked' feed to the cam is off the permanent radio feed.
As you say; this must stay live to preserve the settings.

The 'dash cam' feed is off the ignition feed.

Phew..

I've not really worried about this as the van has a dual battery system.
The Dash cam (Thinkware f100) does sense the battery voltage (level can be defined) and shut down if it dips below the defined voltage.

All seems to be working as expected.

edit: I looked up the consumption in the online manual; 3.25 watts with the rear view camera fitted.

It's enough to kill the battery if you leave it on for a few days without running the van, but as said above, it's not a problem with a twin battery system, or if the van is used on a daily basis :)

that is 0.25A

average capacity for a single battery van is 70~80Ah. lets take half the battery as lower limit so you still barely start and remove some due to having a worn battery.
so lets take 25Ah usable: that is 100 hours or about 4 days. so getting over te weekeind even with a crappy single battery is no problem.
