Unlocking - key fob or something else?

Postby Stranga » Sun Dec 31, 2017 12:40 pm

Having issues with my remote unlocking:-

Key fob wont work at all then -
After a short drive it works for a hour or so
After a long drive it works for a few hours

I used to just open all the doors using the key in the drivers door (back twice) but now doing this only unlocks the drivers door, if I jump in and press the unlock button on the passenger door nothing happens, start the engine then press it again and it unlocks!

I am quite prepared to buy a new remote fob off ford (my original Ford fob was pretty battered and stopped working so sent it away to get refurbished by a 3rd party company and it worked fine for a couple of months) but want to be sure that its def the keyfob that's the issue and nothing else.

Any advice / suggestions welcome.

Cheers

Your auxiliary battery, under the drivers seat is cream crackered

Thanks for the quick replies

Probably no more expensive to replace than a keyfob.

I will check it out.......thanks again.

Exactly the same as the OP problems but this is the 4th time its happened and im out of warranty now.
Whats this auxillary battery under the seat you speak of?
Many thanks

You may or may not have two batteries in your Custom, but if you do, one of them is a dedicated starter battery, and one is an aux battery that also assists with starting. If your aux battery is failing, then the electrics will play up, or not work at all, until you turn on the ignition, at which point the starter battery is switched in, ready for a start.
In a Mk7 Transit, the aux battery is the front one, under the drivers seat, but I believe that (for some reason!) it's the rear one in a Custom.
If you've had the problem several times, I would lay odds that the "repairer" charged up the failing battery and sent you on your way. It really needs replacing, and it's probably best to do both at the same time :)

Thanks for the fast reply. Iv been looking and i think it only has 1 battery. Its going to be going into a proper garage and not a dealer this time. Its works van not mine but a huge pain in the arse using the safetly lock key and switching ignition on every time to opem amy door but the drivers.
Dont have any problems like this or any at all with my mk5. Id drive that over my new one any day of the week.

Right heres an update:-

Both batteries have been removed and tested - both showing as alright (on 2 separate tests)

Both trickle charged till full and re fitted

Keyfob locks and unlocks doors fine after refitting

Following morning - keyfob wont work and key will only open drivers door

Any other suggestions as to what might be causing this? It has been suggested that I try getting the key re programmed but that still doesnt explain the key going from opening all doors to just drivers door.

Update update

Been told its most likely the keyfob as the reason all the doors now don't unlock with the key is due to the latest software update (had mine done in Dec) this now only lets the key unlock the drivers door for security due because of people breaking into vans with molegrips etc on drivers lock opening all doors.
