Towing weights

Postby man le-mans » Sat Jan 06, 2018 7:38 pm

My mk7 T350 115BHP fwd has a GTW of 5500kg
The mk8 350 130BHP fwd from what I can see has GTW of 5050kg
This is disappointing has it's a big difference. Is the heavy duty axle a towing axle and will allow me to carry more ie 5500 giving me a different diff

If towing weight is important, why wouldn't you buy a RWD :?: :?

Because they are higher and don’t fit under my canopy.

Gtw's are down to axle ratios, the mk8s have low axle ratios as standard hence the low Gtw's

So would the 4.43 standard axle be much different to the uprated axle 4.71 in MPG, and make it rev lots more on motorways

You're looking at a ratio which is under 8% wider, (4.43 x 8%=4.78) so whatever was your speed at 3000rpm, will now be just under 240rpm more (3240rpm) for the same speed. :)

Thank you, sounds like half a gear difference if that makes sense

Interestingly, when I fitted bigger wheels/tyres to my Mk6, (which effectively gave it longer legs by 10%) the overall fuel consumption was no better than "as standard" and in fact was just a tad worse. This was probably due to the gear ratios being a bit high for the engine, and more frequent gear changes required :(

I was thinking along them lines, with a bigger diff would make even less MPG. I know a few mates that have the mk8 now and all say the MPG is down compared to the mk7, and to make it even worse with a towing diff.
I don’t tow my track car that much but would like to in the future.
Now confused with what to do.
Only ordered it few weeks ago so can still makes changes I think.
