DPF - best practices? Wbat actually works?

Postby huns » Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:36 am

Let's have a topic about DPF.
What actually works? What doesn't?

My story:
So, lucky for us, our MK8 (2.2, strongest) just had a DPF error pop up twice yesterday.
- The van barely has -40.000km (25k miles).
- It is only used for long trips, highways, etc. It is kept in a dry warehouse, and when we have to pick up goods or deliver them (wholesale), we use it. Still has that new smell. It was also driven fast, hard.
- We did not use 'premium diesel' on it.
- We did not use DPF additives.

#2
We also have a Connect Tourneo, and even though it's been driven with 130km/h (highway speeds) at least once a week and had the same problem at just 7500km. After we drove it with high RPMs and like a madman, the warning is gone for now. (Its on 20.000km atm.) But, the Transit should never had a warning.

The questions, or tricks I have read, seen:
  • Does static regeneration work? Some posts online said it is mostly ineffective.
  • Should I use premium diesel always, or every second tank? Does that help?
  • Do additives actually help? Seen two kinds. One that goes into the fuel, one that you get into the exhaust line (iirc by removing the sensor?).

Cheers!

Hmm the manual also states a similar thing (lower gear, higher RPM), but an online material said that you also need to put load on the engine and driving in a lower gear alone does not help.
There was an engineer I met a few months back, he told me about a chemical/fluid that can clean it. They basically remove the filter part (or the full exhaust), and soak the filter part into this solution for 24 hours.
Problem is, I can't recall what he told me. I could swear it was simple Ammonia, but again, I can't remember, and I guess soaking it in the wrong thing could ruin the filter itself. (No idea, sadly, there are no experts on the topic in my country.)

I also found some liquids that claim to be able to clean it. (Soot cannot be regenerated, it just builds up infinitely. If something could get THAT out....)

when my dpf got blocked the van said drive to clear but the van was in limp mode so it was impossible to get any speed going , ford tell me to keep the revs over 2000 as much as possible , ridiculous really as the eco mode on the van is telling you drive carefully but this makes the dpf get blocked , anyway so far so good mine hasn't blocked again yet but I am driving on motorways a lot more in 5th gear instead of 6th as I have to do over 70 to get over 2000 revs but as I pointed out on another thread my mpg goes up driving in 5th as opposed to 6th

I found on mine if you get up t 55 and want to use top it’s a waste of time going into 5th gear I think like you say recklessroad 6th will be a wast of time and will end up running in 5th van was probably designed for German motorways then it may be of some use
