Rooflight Installation

Postby chuffstix » Wed Feb 14, 2018 10:06 am

Has anyone installed a rooflight/ vent into their Mk8?

I want to put a 50cm one in but the roof is pretty curved and the ones I'm looking at need a flat surface.

If anyone has done it I'd appreciate any advice.

The thing about youtube is that there's loads of people happy to show you the installation they did yesterday but not many people showing you how well they're holding up a year or two later.

For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY9TXhDEqHA showing installation of a HUGE rooflight/ vent on a mk8 - there must be an inch of sealant under the edges on each side to make it fit the curve of the roof. Can't imagine that's going to be good for very long, and it's going to be a pain in the arse to sort out down the line now it's sikaflex'ed in.

I looked at putting a opening one in my bus instead of the fixed Ford one but was unable to find one as I use my van all year round I have insulated it and covered it over with the roof lineing witch is a shame it would be nice to have a opening one but the glass one had a lot of condensation on it

No issues with the curve in the roof? Did you pack it out on the sides? Any pics would be good if you've got them.
