Thinking of a change

Postby clarkey1 » Tue May 01, 2018 7:14 pm

Ok been looking to change from a 2010 mk7 to a mk8. I've looked at the custom but I want something bigger to carry all of my gear.

The mk8 looks are growing on me and I think it will suit my needs. I'm not keen on the look of the custom in L2 H2 guise but for some reason it looks good in the mk8, putting all that aside though it's the extra room I really want.

What I'm interested in is your opinion on the mk8 v custom on things like practicality, fuel economy, residuals, comfort etc so I can make an informed choice as to what to do next! Your opinions would be greatfully received.
Thanks in advance.

I’ve got a 2010 mk7 Mwb 350 now and have order mk8 l2h2. The people I’ve spoken to say the mk8 will do less mpg by 3-5 miles and you will be changing gears more often. They also use more ad blue than fords say but nicer to drive. They also can’t tow as much as the mk7 which seems mad.
Saying that I’m still looking forward to get my mk8 in September. When I ordered it late December they told me 16-18 weeks which was mid April but I then got a email to say because of some options it’s now July, which I refused and asked for September as I wasn’t happy buying a van 5 weeks before a new plate come out which they agreed to

Nice one don't blame you on the date thing. I'm weighing up my options on either new or used. Did you buy through the scrappage scheme?

No I will sell my van privately as it’s in excellent condition with only 73k on the clock.

I was looking at used but by the time I put the bits on it that I wanted it wasn’t worth it. Got a excellent deal on new anyway so would have only save few grand if I went for a year old van.

It’s not people I went with but as said the reason it’s late is because I’ve put extras on it. A bloke I know went into a ford dealer near me and wanted a Kuga with few extras and was told it be about Christmas time, so it’s not just the dealer I’ve used it’s fords build time.

I always say bigger is better my plumber friend has a custom that’s a nice van but very small and I’ve got a 2015 l4 h3 and love the size nothing worse than moving gear around to get to stuff

I know people that work smaller vans and I have no idea how they do it. I like to put my pipe inside the van rather than outside.
L4 is massive tho isn’t parking a issue

I guess that’s the over hang on steeper drives.

There 2 worlds apart mk8 loads better bigger better inside the seats flip up and cleaner looking ,no where to put tea at lunch tho Like the old flip down bit on the mk7 but that’s not to bad I find the mk8 only does 22.7 mpg and no where near as fast as my old van but mk7 wasn’t much better on fuel air con is a nice touch and the phone connectivity with dab radio have u test drive any yet

My mate bought a new one last year 17 plate and I drove that few months back. Was nice to drive but found the gearing higher, where the mk7 you can easy use 4th 5th at lower speeds. It be nice to have bit more space with the extras Ive ordered. I do think fords have got back with the mk8 with less mpg and less towing weights

Yes I find that times I’ve had to go to first gear my old van u can put it in any gear it would pull mk8 is a very lazy engine still a better van tho so things like that can b over looked but I guess a remap would help mines 125 hp I bet the 155bhp is better fuel and power . I’ve not read much about re maps tho breaks are expensive ford wanted 475 for disc and pads on the front so il do that my self but not sure if u need to get it of the bearing I might do a post see what f anyone knows

We've got two 2.0 Mk8s and the fuel consumption is definitely better than the mk7s.
On the other hand you need adblue.

One is a 130 fwd manual, gets about 32 mpg. The same driver got 28 mpg in a mk7.

Mines a 170 auto and gets 30 mpg.
Before this van I had a 3.0 Navara which did 25 mpg so I'm happy.

That’s what I’ve got coming 130 fwd 350 manual. My mk7 does about 28mpg running 3 tons with short trips. But the 2 people I know who’s gone from mk7 to mk8 say it’s worst. I wonder if it’s the different driving styles
Bet the 170 auto is a lovely van to drive

Make that three - having had both, the MPG of the Mk8 is a bit worse. Mind you, the Mk8 is such a nice van compared with the 7 I kinda forgive it.

After 2000 mls round Ireland mines upto 28 to 29 mpg not much difference using 5 th or 6 th gear just wish it had same diff ratio as my mk6 once on a motorway I never took it out of top its a bit high geared I’m toying with swoping the crownwheel and pinion and maybe a remap when out of warranty
