Removing Rear aircon

Postby dumper » Mon Jul 09, 2018 3:53 am

Hi I want to remove the rear aircon unit in the back of my mk8 17 seat Minibus camper conversion as it is in the now rear storage area and is in the way and anything metal gets damp I am going to remove the unit and all the pipe work underneath and plug the pipe work at the flexible pipes that come off at the front of the van anyone know what the size and thread of the plugs I need to seal them off cheers

Are they just blanked off on normal ones? How? I'd maybe give Ford a call if they're just plus they'll probably be cheap enough won't they?

Hi loot had a word with ford locally they don’t now what thread is at the end of the flex pipes but to replace the pipe work without the flex pipes to the rear is £300 so not really on just need to find some plugs to seal them off my brother is a refrigeration engineer but as the weather at the moment is giving him a lot of work and not the time to look at my van I was hoping to find some plugs to make it easy for him all he would need to do is drain the system plug it and refill I could then remove the rest of the rear system

Is there no way to loop them? Like take one off and fit the spare end of the other where that one was?
You know - like bypassing the heater matrix on the old ones?

Hi thanks for replying the flex pipes are different bore size so can’t link together I was hoping to find out what thread they are and just get some plugs to blank them off

Interested to see if you get anywhere with this. I was looking to do the same for my camper. I thought I would have to have refrigerant drained the remove pipes/plug then refill system but don't know if that is correct. In the end I kept it in!

Haven’t got it done you with the hot weather before I left for holiday aircon places are all flat my brother is aircon engineer and was flat out i tryed a mobile one but he was also flat out but talking to him and my brother you don’t link them you block them off I was looking at doing it at the back and leaving the pipes under the alone it been easier to get at instead of where the flex pipes come off the engine if I get it done before you I will post up what I end up using cheers

Yes mate Kevin Green air conditioning from Lincoln did it he fitted two blank seals in the pipes under then bonnet in the pipes to stop refrigerant going to the back unit then I removed the unit but it didn’t fully seal it he had to cap the pipes at the rear of the van where I cut the pipes been ok fo over a year now.

Hi @Dumper

Where about did you cut and cap the lines to the rear air con?

There is a point under the loading door that seems like a junction but not too sure.

Thanks

At first the guy who did it changed the seals in the pipe work to the back for the caps that come with new pipes one was in the engine bay from the top and the also from the bottom of the engine he went under the van to the rear of n/s wheel but it lost its pressure after 8 months so he came back and plugged the pipes at the rear end so my van still has the pipes to the back if it goes again he will cut it under the side door.
