I’m here as my 2017 tourneo went a bit wrong last week.
My wife was driving, had a bad smell from the clutch while reversing up a hill then 10 mins later break pedal went rock hard and effectively we had no breaks. It was recovered to my local back street garage and the mechanic who’d serviced it for the last year or so said he thought the vacuum pump had failed, and likely that was because the cam belt had delaminated leaving garbage floating around the system.
So, he said they didn’t have the equipment to change the belt (probably didn’t want the responsibility) and wouldn’t be happy replacing the vacuum pump without the belt being done, so said to contact a ford specialist.
I got the van at 6 months old, so had used my local ford dealer for service and mot right up until they charged £1500 for a failed clutch at 55k miles, and mentioned my ignition was a bit “sticky” - the same ignition they had replaced 12 months before because it was sticking!
Anyway, called them, got a very helpful woman who mentioned she’d only been there a couple of weeks, she said there was a “block” on cam belt changes for these engines currently - obviously I had a wee moan about that and she said it was due to a recall on them, she checked mine and I had forgotten that on the September 2021 service at Ford, I benefited from a new cam belt due to the recall. I reckon I’ve done less than 10k miles since then but as a huge family car we tend to do lots of short journeys, so maybe that fuel-in-oil dpf thing is worse? So they said they’d have a look and if the belt has delaminated again they’d get me a hire car as mine unusable and fix it “under warranty”.
As it stands, after 5 days we’re driving a 72 plate tourneo from enterprise rent a car, and have had no contact from the dealer, just Ford rentals - but tbh they can take as long as they like now! Could be the original belt contamination maybe, but I’ll be asking for an engine replacement, been a bit of a pup this car, but if the belt thing is sorted I’d have another (the rental is real good so far).
So, for info, I think my service routine counts as a full service history - likely the last back street service was before the Ford service schedule was needed, so could be seen as full Ford history? But they seem to be putting their hands up, only if the back street guy had the kit I’d have been paying through the nose unnecessarily having not had any contact on the recall - even on the 2021 replacement.
Best advice, check with the nearest dealer for any cam belt related issues!
