split charge query

Postby mikeymike » Sun Jan 22, 2017 5:39 pm

Hi All,
I am currently converting a new custom to 4 berth camper.I have converted many vw t5.This is my first transit and just love it.My question.I plan to put a leisure battery under drivers seat and use a durite split charge connected to main starter battery to keep it charged up to run fridge lights ect.I have done this many times on the T5.1 but had a problem on a 2016 vwT6 (as it had a electrical regeneration system). Will I have any problems doing this on the custom ??

Simple answer is Yes it will have problems, there have been a few posts on this topic, I run an inverter for charging tool batteries and my leisure battery never fully charges, if I charge the battery weekly it's just about usable.
I've looked at Sterling battery to battery charging systems and despite the cost it's really the only way to get a 100% use ability, someone has fitted one on here and so far I haven't seen an update on how it's working. I've got to sort my system out in the next week or two ready for the pre season fun and games.
I will try and post a link to previous threads..

I'm well confused...

I've looked at the links and the video, thank you posting them, but I'm still none the wiser. Other than it looks like I need to spend £240 on a charger?

I've got twin batteries with a third battery in the back to run my 240v. I had it connected up last week and the third battery never seems to charge. It's on a split charge relay system, but I'm not sure which battery up the front it is connected to, which should it be to get it to charge the rear battery?

I found this

Looks like it wasn't worth me getting the split charge system hooked up, I might as well just plug my 3rd battery in at night

Hane all the customs got smart charging or is it after a certain year?
just follow the onscreen instructions and it's fairly idiot proof...trouble is, we keep producing better idiots

I think it's a Euro5 and 6 thing so will apply to all Customs.

From the video, the battery SHOULD get to 80% charge, but I've only ever seen mine drain down and top up on my battery meter. I think I will just charge mine up every week for how little I use the 240v, I'm thinking about disconnecting the split charge system completely in case the increased voltage damages the battery, if and when it does charge it.

cant you fit a separate solar charger and a panel on the roof? just a thought, might be easier.

most campervan builders use this flexible type and use either high strength double sided tape or silicon adhesive to stick the panel to the roof. its a much lower profile than the solid panel type and is easier to mount.

My leisure battery was about 5 years old, the run time has declined despite showing fully charged, so gave up and bought a new battery it's now working properly again.
