Failed break in. How far could they have got?

Postby user774 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 10:18 am

Morning chaps.

New 66 plate transit custom Trend 310 140ps Euro 6, long wheel base high roof.

Someone tried breaking into my van last night. Had a knock on the door at midnight from the police saying they were disturbed by a neighbour. The security did its job so they failed to open the van but the driver's lock is popped out and the door scratched.
I have deadlocks on the rear doors, and the bulkhead is installed. No way in to the back even if they can trip the global unlock by spinning the lock. (I have read here that it's possible).

So my question is:
How far could they have gone if my neighbour hadn't disturbed them? I have heard that once in the cab you can do all sorts of black magic by plugging into the laptop port. Could they have driven it away without the key? And if they return can they finish the job?

Thanks in advance.
Andy.

Ok, thanks for that.
In that case, where is the OBD socket and how can I secure it?

Fit hykee or similar locks to the front doors and replace the obd port with a fake one and hide the one on the van,get a steering lock (wont stop them for long but may put them off trying) and fit a decent alarm system, the more visible security you have may be enough to deter them from trying, if your really really worried get a wheel clamp.

I was chatting to an auto locksmith last week, and apparently as the new flat Ford keys aren't easily picked (yet) the thieves twist out the locks, possibly damaging the door, and get in that way

As always fellas, I'm eternally grateful for your help.

I spoke to the garage who supplied the van (which I absolutely love by the way) and I am currently en route to them to get the OBD hidden.

They only do transits, and tell me that because it's a euro6, there is no way to physically secure the OBD, as the are a different size from the euro5 and the thingumajig (technical term) doesn't fit. But they'd be interested if anyone here knows of a fix for he euro6. Anyone?

Andy.

Sure I read on here a while back that access to the OBD on Custom's didn't give the same issues as on Mk7's as the key was difficult to copy (unlike Tibbe) and to have it programmed needed connection to ETIS and an account.

Is that not the case?

The new Custom OBD port is in the same place, but it has an extra bit on the back of the actual port, making it larger than the mk7. Apparently.

Although mine is no longer located behind the flap under the steering wheel that says OBD on it ;)
