Headlights

Postby Mike » Wed Aug 21, 2013 6:12 pm

What are the headlights like on the higher level vans (projector type), anyone fitted or thinking of fitting hid bulbs to the dip beam?

Yeah, I have thought of fitting a HID kit, but I have to wait for my Sport to arrive as the loan vehicle I have is the base with the non-projector headlights, so I can't 'experiment' on it. I would also like to find a way of replacing the H4 DRL bulb with something whiter, i.e. LED, but I'm not sure if this can be done.

Is it a single filament H4 just for the drl or is that just using the low beam as the drl on the low spec vans?

From what I can see on the base model I have on loan, the DRL appears to use a low voltage to the dipped beam H4 bulb to produce the yellowish glow rather than the full power white. I had a Golf Mk6 3 years back that used this technique and never managed to find a solution. Maybe the Chinese LED bulb sellers on eBay can come to my rescue now, but I'll have to wait until my van arrives in a couple of weeks to have a good poke around.

Yep, can't have yellow drl's, looks like a base spec Audi.

Exactly. Not a good look, especially on a Sport :(

For reference, here's a photo of the base model's headlight unit when the engine is on only, i.e. DRLs on, lights off.

Hi,
The projector headlamps come with cornering lights too, which are actually very impressive, im happy with lights and dont think they need upgrading.

Yeah, looking forward to trying out those cornering lights. Never had them before.

Are the cornering lights in the headlight or do they just switch one fog light on?

Proper separate light in the headlight cluster that points into the bend/corner. Nothing to do with the foglights.

Nice, they'll be a huge improvement over the all the previous Transits.

OK, it is yet another gadget, but you could arguably say the same about Bluetooth, reversing cameras, heated seats, aircon, CD players...
