Knackered drivers door - beware when opening them!!!

Postby hoggyf » Thu Feb 13, 2014 11:19 am

The drivers door last night was about half open when my hand slipped off the handle, I was parked half on the kerb so the van tilted, the door fell open and once closed has moved and wont open now, garage thinks its new hinges and a check strap and Ford are suggesting its not under warranty!!!

Surely the check strap should be capable of holding and stopping such a big heavy door??

Anyone else experienced this??

Not yet, but it's taking me a while to get used to the door handle being in the door panel rather than on top of it as it was on the Mk6 & 7.

Similar experience a few weeks back. A strong gust of wind wrenched the door out of my hand and it was flung back on its hinges. It made a terrible noise and I was sure something had broken, but I think I got away with it, no visible damage.

Had another look this morning and noticed that compared to a mk 7 the doors opens a little wider and where the check strap is bolted to the shell you can see the shell flexing when the door is at full stretch. I was always conscious of this as a potential problem because of the size and weight of the doors. To my mind its a design fault, I think the shell or check strap bracket needs strengthening.

MK7 flexes around the hinges and check strap too. Can you post up a pic of the damage to the check strap area?

Went in on wed morning for the day to then get a phone call in the afternoon to say they've had to order hinges from Germany, (3 days delivery) and if that doesn't work it will need a new door! Not bloody happy!!!

one of the first things I thought when I got the van, was to be careful with the door, as it was so heavy and opens so wide. I can only open the door half way while sitting in the drivers seat before stepping down and allowing it to go fully open.

Ford better get there hand in there pocket to cover this

Builder I work with has bought 3 or 4 Customs, and one of them went in for this problem last week.

No arguments from Ford - it was covered under warranty.

Builder was not going to tell the guy that drives it for a bit to scare him  Told him it needed a new door and it was coming out of his wages. G1t. :D
