Hmm, so either you don't have the updated check straps, or mine was done before I bought it? Mine was used, 2 years old when I got it.

Can't see any evidence of repairs / respray though.

Hmm, curiously, the passenger's door only opens to < 1m striker to door as before. A very noticable difference.

Now I'm confused..

Yup. The passenger's door visibly opens less. Still plenty though.

Probably had the updated check strap fitted on one side.

Quite a few vans have been through the bodyshop and claimed on warranty when they are on used sales pitch.

Hi all.....this just happened to me last night......I was told by the previous owner that this had happened before I bought the van and had been repaired and “upgraded” my question is the van is out of warranty now and I’m not sure how I stand on getting it repaired, will the last repair be guaranteed? Any help appreciated as my local dealer was very vague..

Drivers Door & Wind

Postby Doormedic » Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:25 pm

Today my drivers door blew out of my hand when opening it. It has damaged my front wing, just about closes and locks, just about opens to let me in.
Question, I’ve read all the previous post, about Ford carrying out this repair under warranty, but why ??
It wasn’t Fords fault I couldn’t hold the door in the wind.
I have a friend who has 5 Customs, and it’s happened to all of them and Ford repaired them FOC
I hope they fix mine, is there anything I should say or don’t say when I take it in next week ?
64 plate
Thanks

It is Ford's fault really as they have designed hinges and mountings that are simply not up to the job. With such big heavy doors the hinges should be man enough to take a gust of wind also they designed the interior handle which may look fine style wise but is totally useless at being able to hold when windy, which is why newer models have an extra place to hold on the interior and I believe they have uprated the hinges on newer vans also. So I believe it is Ford's fault. There maybe an issue if its outside of warranty and the dealers will probably not want to know so go direct to Ford customer relations- they were good to me.

Every time I ask my Ford dealer they are not aware of any modifications?

The earlier Customs had a longer check-strap on the door, this allowed them to open too far making them more susceptible to getting caught by the wind. The modification was to fit a shorter check-strap which reduced the amount they can open. I'm not sure what year the shorter ones got fitted from the factory.
