Brake pedal too high - is it causing you leg ache?

Postby routetelecom » Sat Aug 09, 2014 11:43 am

Hi guys

be gentle...1st post and rather a strange one!!

Ive had my Custom since March and up until 2 months ago was only using it a couple times a week.
Now using it every day as the business is getting busier.

The problem im having is my right leg is aching like a B*%"^@. To the point i can hardly walk let alone work.

IMO its caused by the brake pedal being too high, so when your in stop/start traffic, constantly moving from gas to brake my leg has to move rather than just my foot.

Ive tried every seat / steering wheel position and no joy. If the seat is right back its better, but i cant depress the clutch!!!

Has any one else had this problem? Is there a solution? Can the brake pedal be adjusted lower?

It seems ridiculous i know, but ive not had this problem in my old transit or vivaro, just with the custom.
Appreciate any feedback / help :)

Yes I found the same coming from the trafic . I am only 5 foot 8 and have the seat back as far as it will go. I think it is to do with the crash testing. If you move the pedals down your foot might get trapped in a crash. You are not normally on the throttle when you crash. I have done 5000 miles and have got use to it and as I race cars I can use my left foot on the brakes sometimes to save keep moveing right foot ( don't try this at home as they say). I was going to put a block on the throttle but then that would be to high .
I think the drivers seat armrest on the out side has gone for the same reason for side impact .
I price to pay for 5 star rating.

i was talking to my friend about this, if you have the seat too high so your leg isnt comfortably touching the floor the front edge of the seat will cut off the blood and you get aches.

Once i lowered the seat so my knee is at 90' it stopped my aches in my left leg

I agree that, while better than on the Mk7, the driving position, seats, pedals, etc. aren't one of the Custom's strong points. The seats are too small and don't go back far enough, the squab is tiny and doesn't offer any under-knee support at all, the pedals are set to high, especially the brake pedal, and the head restraint is too far back. Rant over

I haven't noticed it tbh. Seat is as high as it'll go, 5'9", 32" inside leg, so average really.

Yes, I have had the same. I've been to doctors as I'm in such pain driving my 66 plate custom. Tried every seating position. Love my van but it's making me feel ill. All my veins behind my knee have blown and I'm in agony. Has Any one else had this?

Same issue detected as soon as I tried the custom.
In most of cars / vans the brake pedal is at the same level of the throttle pedal.

I don't think there is a solution for this issue.

i dont seem to have a problem at 6 foot 2" and big feet. My heel is on the floor even though the pedal is high.
and you know what they say about people with big feet...........no leg ache, but hard to find good shoes!

Yes good shoes are a must Cuban heels are the obvious choice
But others such as cowboy boots and jellies can also make a good impression

6ft5 builder, size 11 boots and 15 stone 4. seat all the way back, both heels on the floor, and no aches whatsoever.

If it helps...

Same here too. Short ar*e 5' 6 1/2" and legs are too short.

I also think the clutch is too high as well.
Tried driving in steelies, also wellies, then tried my softer walking boots (which seem the best so far)

Adjusted the seat so many times since I got the van last month, which has helped a little bit but at least one day each week my knees will ache like a b*tch - which is today as it happens.

I'm toying with cutting a bit of plywood to fix to the floor at the point my heels touch to see if that will help.
