Brake pads

Postby poolie » Tue Sep 01, 2015 5:29 pm

Brake pad warning light has just popped up on my van. Can anyone recommend to me some front brake pads for my transit custom? Also anyone have an idea how long I can use the van while light is on before it causes any damage?
TIA

I had to get them from Ford all the local independents couldn't get them, to be honest the stealers quoted a good price to supply and fit about £130 I thought I could get pads for £40/50 but they ended up about £90...not much of a saving really over letting them loose on it!! As for how long they will last! mine hadn't put the light on they just looked low and they didn't have more than about 4mm left.....the last bit seems to go quicker so 1000 miles to new disks required is my guess?

Brake pads

Good thing that you had warning light to come on. I started feel some strange things with the breaks. As I was due to service, I didnt look twice. In service I was told that pads are completly worn. Asked about the light but no acceptable answer was given.

I think I went two months or more between light and brake pad replacement. Was told the fronts were 90% worn and the backs were 80% worn. Haven't done the backs yet and that was a couple of months ago (cashflow issues). I periodically inspect the rear discs for signs of wear but still looking OK and no unusual feeling or noise when braking yet. However Your Mileage May Vary

Hi there everyone!

I know this thread isn't recent, but it sure is relevant to this day, so i thought i'd throw my 2 pennies of experience at it:

So, just after 30k on the 15 plate transit custom, service and brake messages pop up and we head to the local stealers! Heads to the service and parts desk to get it booked in, explain the situation and let him know that i have free servicing for 4 years (which leaves him a lil nervous), and that i would like to know how much will the brake pads replacement cost me!! He then continues, pulling some paperwork out of one of his drawers and starts reading it to me! -transit connect (he goes), to what i reply- nope, it's the transit custom. Oh yes (he continues), "transit custom discs and pads", "nope, just front and rear pads please, no discs!" (there is me correcting again). "Oh sorry" he says "yes, front and rear break pads will cost £178 plus vat plus labour! So i asked how much would labour cost me, to what he replied- "well it depends on how long it will take!!!"
At this point i'm getting a little nervous myself just purely for the fact that one could tell he had no idea of what he was talking about, and so i agreed to book it in to get the issues dealt with.

Anyway, i head out and back home itching about the poor service and goes looking online where i came across with the forum (Hello there!!!), as well as this bit of info which i believe is the electronic version of his printed out scratch paper: https://www.ford.co.uk/owner/service-an ... irs/brakes

Please note that the prices do include vat and labour!!! having this in mind, i don't think it is at all expensive, but i sure as hell feel like someone is trying to rip me off!...
Anyway, i'll let you guys know how i get on soon.
I hope this may be of help to peeps on a similar situation.

The web site shows rrp but that Ida's just a guide, I'm sure the dealers can charge you whatever they want :-(

There will be good dealers out there I'm sure.

But in any case, wherever you go try and get a solid quote first and as you've done, read up as much as you can so you don't pay for a new what ya macallit.:-)

Also, I'm not familiar with rwd custom so treat the rear brakes the same as you would a fwd ie. Front brakes as there's no half shafts or axle to deal with. :-)

Do you have info on what free servicing includes?

Personally if he wants 178+vat for 2 sets of pads then xx but probably 250 on top for an easy job like that then go buy some pads off eBay and find a friendly mechanic to fit them :-)
