Rear Light Cluster

Postby Ilford1 » Mon Dec 19, 2016 5:08 pm

Has anybody customised rear lights on the Transit Custom ? The bottom of the rear lights is only the part that lights up, looking to customise, so the top half lights up as well. It has a big cluster but only half is needed so want to try and make use of the whole cluster.

I think you'll have trouble doing any mods to them as they're all monitored by the canbus system. I agree that it's wasted space though.

Are they? I always thought they were too but I was chatting to a tow bar fitter and he said they could be spliced into because the rear lights were not canbus. Mind you, this was at the time of my first van (2014) and things might have changed. It also might be a load of bollocks and he was talking crap. You really need to talk to someone who knows...

I had to use resistors when I changed to led brake/tail/ indicator bulbs as it threw up a bulb fault on the dash.

As I don't have a clue, would that mean they are then?

They are certainly monitored from bcm, so changing the load will cause faults

Interesting......as I have changed multiple bulbs over my 2016 custom and no errors have appeared. I do get a constant glow from one of the cabin LED's annoyingly but the sidelights, fogs, etc have no errors. I was going to try the brake lights when needed. I was told the lighting isn't on the canbus system..... I guess I'll find out soon enough!

Changing the brake light bulbs to led will certainly throw a bulb error, but as Ake says, it could be the bcm sending the error rather than canbus. Does the bcm control the canbus?
