retrofit 12V socket in back

Postby drzilog » Tue Mar 07, 2017 2:16 pm

My Custom doesn't have the optional 12v socket fitted in the rear, but reading around apparently it should have the wiring in place?

Sure enough there is an extra loop of cabling on the offside that isn't there on the nearside. Is this it? (visible on pic) It won't pull out though... is it just snagged on something? Also I presume the round hole is the mounting point for the socket? Is there a 3rd party one that is recommended & fits well (or does anyone have a link to the proper Ford one)?

Thanks!

that might be a cable for your sensors. if you look at your picture you can se an orange blob on the wood panel, if you remove the panel this is about where the wires come out of the loom to feed the 12v socket. Depending on what model and config you have you might also find a couple of control boxes behind there too.

Mine didn't have the wiring, well I couldn't find it and I stuck a camera probe back there. I just ran a feed from the drivers seat point, through the panels and exits at the same point at rear quarter. Fitted a small 4 way fuse block and onward feeds to the 12v socket, led strips and an led umbilical spotlight.

if you haven't specified a 12 v socket they wont bother feeding it round the corner. if you take the side panel off the loom it clipped over the wheel arch and is clearly visible, in between the wheel arch and the rear of the van you should find it.

Had a look to see if could find the connection on mine and found it taped up behind the bottom of the rear light cluster.

Good that the wiring is there ready.
Do you know what plug is required to connect to the wiring loom?
I've been looking on ebay for 12V sockets and they all seem to just have 2x 12V spade connectors - so I want to get it connected up properly

Thanks!

So does the socket connect straight onto the wiring plug?
Or do you need to run a couple of wires?

Excellent - like the sound of that.
So as long as I can find the cables, it's a tenner & done in 5 minutes!!

A mate had one fitted by the dealer when he bought his - they charged him about £100!!

And once found and plugged in is it a switched live or permanent? Does it only turn on with ignition? I'm hoping so as I would like to charge tools when on the move without killing the Ford crappy battery system.
