Presumably you put it in and it'll upload some files to the sat nav but then the maps are used from the sd card after that?
You can buy updates online and download them to usb then install that to the van but I'm not sure if that is just to update the sync, some of the map sd cards say read only on them which would stop piracy?

Not sure if you just pop the v5 sd card out and put the new one in, or if there is more to it.
There are some copies on ebay but I wouldn't risk it. I believe the official cards do have sync navigation software updates (if any), as well as road network updates on them.
USB update downloads for sync, from what I have seen, are for the USA Ford.com only.
I have purchased the V7 for my 2015 custom. Engine running removed old card put new one in and let it do it's stuff. It rebooted and worked fine but I did have to turn the van off and back on to get the satnav to display. At first it had said "satnav not available".
All working but not impressed when, being guided off the M6 south of Manchester I find myself driving on a new road that was not on the latest edition! These roads aren't built over night so why on my first journey with the newest 2017 mapping do I find a road that has been included. Not happy about that!
Yes oem sat navs are pretty poor for that. Why not use google maps or similar on your phone and use it through the sync. It updates instantly, does brilliantly with live traffic work arounds and ive never found myself on an unrecognised road.
Annoying when you have the built in Nav.... when we last worked in London we had both running as an experiment and always went with Google or the "maps" app on the iPhone over the built in Nav. It constantly adjusted the route according to traffic.
