18" alloys and tyre wear.

Postby S60r » Mon May 08, 2017 11:16 pm

Evening,

Anyone wearing 18's with a solution to the outsides scrubbing? I have tried more pressure and I'm up to 48 and they still scrub out. Particularly near side.

Do I have to alter the geometry settings to suit or do I need to uprate the shock/springs?

The 16's oem fit are obviously made for the suspension setup, but they look crap in comparison.

Anyone got a solution?

Many thanks.

:)

Is your the Sport BJT? If so it has different geometry set up to the standard limited I think? The sports are 18's from the factory...my lowly limited is set up for the 16's.

I'm wearing Bridgestones 235 50 18 101y

I think they have soft sidewalls even though they are the 101 Extra loads.... putting them up to 49 and front to backing them before I have the geometry looked at.

Sport does have different geometry. Someone, some time ago posted the toe in and camber settings for Customs and Sport Custom.

Tyre wear is much higher on Sports than standard vans even with the change in geo.

Just fitted some 18" 8J wheels with 235/50R18 on mine, so about to find out for myself! Look great though.

Looks like they reduce the caster for the wider tyre.

I had Continental VanCo 1 tyres on the front of my van for a while, we got the wrong ones by mistake- they had a load rating of (I think) 101 and within 5,000 miles they were bald on the outer edges. I then got the proper Vanco2 with a load rating of 104 and they last almost 30,000 miles! Admittedly I'm only on 15 inch and I might occasionally take quiet roundabouts quicker than I should but I think they're too soft a rating even if they are "extra load".
To be honest, I'm massively impressed with the Vanco2's, if they do them in your size I'd recommend them all day long.

I've got the standard 16 inches on my lwb 310 Ltd, still on the original tyres with just over 40,000 miles on it.

Great info thanks all.

I will see how 49 psi goes, but I think these bridgestones will get to about 15k so not bad considering the nature of the driving..... I will try the Hankooks next. A great tyre on previous vehicles but so many of these aren't suitable for van use.... yes they can carry the load but the sidewall just gives up as they age and they roll over. I think that's what's happening with mine anyway.
