There will be a number of variables to consider whether or not S/S will activate (my problem was that is activated while I was still moving, worringly), the dealer unplugged the module and plugged it back in and it's been fine since. As best I understand the software will consider the following in the calculation:

Ambient air temperature
Oil temperature
Coolant temperature
Engine load (aux power, a/c etc)
Battery Charge

So, if it's below, say, 5c ambient but the engine is up to temperature SS won't work
If it's 20c air temp but the engine temps aren't high enough, SS won't work
etc.

That's great info, I hadn't considered temperature to be factored in, but that will explain why my car doesn't always S/S driving locally even after a long run the day before.
Strangely, my sons Caddy (now thankfully replaced with a Connect!) used to stop when pulling out at the end of our road, just after being started from cold, which was always a nuisance when trying to pull out into busy morning traffic
