Wandering gently

Postby loot » Fri Sep 08, 2017 4:17 pm

Had a search but not found much.

Van is 10000 miles in, has bragan roof bars, has factory alloy wheels which have mich alpin tyres on all 7mm.
Had alignment done, all tyres 50psi, even wear and all geometry is correct.

However, on long drives I've noticed it is a bit like the fooking play bus and i really don't like it :?

The steering is left right left right and i have to constantly correct it, many times when I've not hen watching the road but then caught it, I've had to yank the wheel to correct and have gone over the line slightly.

It's like the rack bolts are loose or something lol.

Could it be the roof bars, tyres or something else?
It really isn't bad or feel loose but it is definitely there ffs lol left right left right. Grrrr.

Any ideas lads?

Also is this sort of thing under warranty?
Bearing in mind the van was bought as salvage and been fully repaired with Ford parts.

Bloody Ford.

The winter tyres won't help!! Michelin alpin's will be lovely 5 degrees and below but bloody soft and squidgy in our tropical 20's.

Yes they may be "all season" by their definition but the have slipes and will be less direct in higher temps for sure.

Sipes? I was thinking of buying 18s with summer tyres on and taking it to another tyre place to see if the local 1 set it to parallel as it does feel that they are wandering lol.

Main reason for the question is I'm wondering if anyone else has it? What about the lads with roof rails on? Can't say mine are noisy or anything.

Mine doesn't wobble
I always wobble a bit but that happens in anything I drive
The lane assist is always going off I just drive along and start thinking of stuff and the van wonders off into the next lane
Had driver alert come on a couple of times too when I got a semi on

How much weight is in it?

If it's empty then drop your tyres by 5 psi

I posted on this about a year ago.

As ake says dropping the front tyre pressure to a bit below the recommended helped.

Manufacturers spend 1000's of hours developing vehicles and then someone mucks about with their recommendations and wonders why their vehicle does something odd

Stick to the recommended tyres and pressures, make sure the geometry is set to their recommended settings too.

I had the same on a ford ranger (steering wander) , I adjusted the steering box and was better. I'm not sure if transit is same setup but might be worth a look. Can you move the steering wheel slightly side to side without the wheels moving?
