First impressions

Postby yzr750 » Sat Sep 09, 2017 12:52 pm

Picked up my new Transit Custom 340L auto last week, 130hp(only one available here).
Got about 1500k's up so I thought I'd give a bit of a comparison to my old mk7 140/330 and a 2016 transit custom 2.2 manual swb 125hp I had on loan whilst my BT50 was being repaired.
The gearbox is ok, not as good as the six speed auto on my old Touareg and not a patch on the 8 speed in my Amarok, but it seems a bit better than the six speed in my ranger.
The new 2.0 euro 6 motor feels like a step up from the 2.2 in the 2016 custom, there's loads more torque between idle and 2500rpm, and it's smoother, quieter and more responsive, also the fuel consumption is better even with the auto box, the first tankful averaged 7.5L/100klm (36mpg), I was averaging 9l/100klm(31mpg) in the 2.2 manual, I averaged in between the two in my 140hp mk7. I had 1200kgs in the back the other day and performance was still adequate.
NVH levels are heaps better than the mk7 and better than the 2.2 Custom, cabin is more comfortable and a better place to be than the mk7 but practicality and storage has taken a step backwards.
I have the sat nav and reversing camera, sat nav is crap, reversing camera is quite good, especially the magnification for lining the tow ball up. Stereo is not bad, better than the mk7.
Stop start is the best implementation of its type on any vehicle I've owned, I usually turn it off because it annoys me but I don't bother in the Transit.
Cruise control is good, holds speed very well, but sometimes likes to decide that you're going too fast round corners and turns itself off :?
One very annoying thing is that the glass panel in the bulkhead reflects what you are looking at through the windscreen and when you look in the rear view mirror you see whats in front of you, not what's behind you.
Build quality has improved since the mk7, especially the paint, the top coat on my mk7 was that thin you could see through to the primer underneath in places. Panel fits are better also and there are no rattles or things falling off.....yet. It seems better screwed together overall.
All in all I'm pleased with it up to now.

Another thing, the gearing on the auto is very short, at 100kmh its turning over 2000rpm, the manual was only turning over 1600rpm.

ADBlue warning came on at 10k, supposed to last for 11k, I wonder if they fill them right up from the factory?

Seeing you just had your first service i thought I'd ask, our Feb 2017 build Transit Custom auto had a report back that rear discs and pads will need replacing before it gets to 30K km. It was serviced at 12 months as it had only done 21,000km. Strangely fronts are all ok. Is that normal?

Checked the report and it said front and rear brake pads have 7 mm remaining so no problem with mine
If you run fully loaded with a heavy trailer you'll see High wear on the rear, or if the driver is one of those people I regularly see driving round with the brakes permanently on because they rest their foot on the brake pedal. Other than that needing to replace them before 30k seems ridiculous and not normal to me.

Not as noisy?
My 2.0l is so much louder than the 2.2 I traded in against it?
Everything else about the facelift model I like though.
I can make the doorbell ring any time I want, all I have to do is go to the toilet.

Just had the 60k service, no problems. Replaced all thr brake pads, didn't need to do the disks as they were well within spec. Also had to replace the tyres (conti vanco 11's) which was disappointing, replaced them with Michelin agilis, hoping they do better.
average fuel consumption now at 8.4l/100ks

Just had 90k service, no problems with the van, only the ford service tech's. Only thing happened since the 60k service was I had to replace a rear light bulb.
Average fuel consumption to date 8.2l/100k's.
