Changing Alloys on Custom Van

Postby decoratordaggs » Sun Sep 24, 2017 12:16 pm

Hi
Looking to change the 15" inch standard wheels on my 2014 Custom van 2.2 diesel to 18". I've found some universal alloys with tyres which are 245/40/R18 97W XL can anyone advise if these will be compatible and suitable for my van? In changing to 18" do I need to notify my insurance etc??
Thanks

Lots on here about tyres and wheels, but - wheels need 5 x160 stud pattern (for Ford Transits and Customs). Tyres for 18" wheels would normally be 235/50x18 101 as on Sport model 290 load. Possible to fit 255/45x18 103 but on the wide side on 8" rims and probably not suited to 7.5" width alloys. These tyre sizes are fine for 215/65x16 standard tyres not sure about 15" wheels which I believe have 215/65x15 . Tyre size conversion (willtheyfit.com) will give you the 18" tyre option and shows the range of speedo inaccuracy. You must however look carefully at the load rating of your new tyre option and the load rate of the wheels against the load rating of your van. I think 97s' would not be suitable for any van and at the very least, with softer walls and lower tyre pressures would scrub the tread very very quickly.
Yes tell the insurance. Some will charge more, some will just need to know. It is not worth the risk of not telling them and then not being covered in an accident. I suggest you do this first before any purchase, find out what they say then make decisions on the wheels.

What did you do about tyre inflation? Standard tyres say 50.2 psi front and 52.4 psi rear but on the 245/45 r18 it says maximum 50psi. So what do you inflate them too as I have those size tyres and suffer from excess wear on outside of tyre. TIA
