mad to get new Custom now with 2018 facelift on way?

Thinking of getting a new Custom as there are some good deals about. However the dealer mentioned the new model which I was unaware of previously! Just done some googling. I actually prefer the exterior look of the current model - new one has the big grill from the regular Transit which I don't think looks as good. Same engine, etc. The big change (potentially) is the interior - the higher trim levels will have Ford Sync 3 with a touchscreen, CarPlay, etc. My current Custom has Sync with Applink which is, let's face it, sh*t. Don't know what cost increase there would be or whether they'll be similar deals as now on the new models (or indeed when the new ones will be available. Presumably order only in the beginning rather than picking up a pre-built as you can do now). Thoughts?

I get all of the Sync 3 functions by tethering my iPhone 6 to my Sync 1.1 with AppLink in my Euro 5 bus.

Sure, it's easy. I have my iPhone on a mag mount on the dash connected via the lightning USB.

I put head unit on Sync and do everything from my iPhone via Siri.

I play locally stored and streaming music via Spotify.

I stream internet radio via a Radio Player app.

I have navigation, handsfree calling, messaging, the lot. I even have my iPhone display....on my iPhone!

I just don't do it on the head unit, there's no point. Sync 1.1 is rubbish, everyone knows that. In the UK we can't even get hold of the Sync update downloads from Ford so we can flash the unit upto a higher level.

If it wasn't for the fact that it would make the upper display redundant I'd fit an aftermarket double-din unit.

Sorry, if you were expecting miracles - where Sync is concerned, there are none!

fair enough lol, that is pretty much how I do it at the moment. It's not too bad. My biggest bugbear is when my iPhone is connected via BT rather than USB, it doesn't show the name of the track that's playing. Anyone know a fix for this?

I don't know - my Android phone works and displays the tracks over BT - didn't realise iPhones were different - works for phone music player & Spotify

There isn't one. iPhones don't offer this functionality over bluetooth for Sync 1.1 with Applink, which is what is fitted in the UK EU5 & EU6 spec vans.

When the updated model comes out it's got Sync 3 and that will do all kinds of funky sh*t with IOS and Android. For example, once tethered, it'll give you Apple Car Play which changes the van display to a driver friendly version of the iPhone display - allowing you to do pretty much anything that your iPhone can do from the van (facia or steering controls).
