how would the oil pump failing hole a piston :? surely it would seize the engine

am only going of what he has said

nothing more or less

Probably a faulty Oil Pump would cause the Oil Jets under the Pistons to spray not enough oil for Piston cooling and thus cause piston failure.

It’s very rare that I agree with V184, but in this instance I have to. If the pistons aren’t getting any oil sprayed into them, the cam, crank etc certainly ain’t.

My guess would be if the pistons aren't getting oil sprayed under them (along with any other issues), they may be overheating, this could cause them to hole, same as detonation on a petrol engine?

when we say hole its a bit like thermal cracks in the alloy piston

so in theory I like to say holed piston. And melted pistons well you tell me what you think

EGR valves are also used to limit combustion temperature to reduce NOx emmisons, so a faulty valve, delete or poor map won't help.

if the oil pump failed the crank would seize long before  this would happen, over-fuelling cracks/ holes pistons, di s used to do it even with the "holy" Bosch pump although more common with the cav pump !

I’m not a mechanic so I’m almost certainly wrong but I thought underfueling is what causes cracked/holed pistons due to running lean and too hot?

On a petrol engine, yes. Diesel rpm is relative to the amount of fuel being pumped in (not throttle position), so under fuelling will just slow the engine.

i fooked my old hilux up by running it low on oil
crank and cam were good just put new set of standard bearings in but a couple of pistons melted to the bore
that had those spray things under the pistons
the dude i got to machine the block said i was a knob for running it low on oil and that was what made them melt
i went to rainford and back bottomc f the dipshit :o

To limit NOx emmisons and reduce pumping losses from compressing air thats not needed for combustion diesel engines now have an intake flap to act like a throttle and control air when needed, the egr valve can be used to warm the engine quickly and also to reduce the oxygen available for combustion reducing the combustion temperature that produce higher levels of NOx.
