if the oil pump failed the crank would seize long before this would happen, over-fuelling cracks/ holes pistons, di s used to do it even with the "holy" Bosch pump although more common with the cav pump !

On a petrol engine, yes. Diesel rpm is relative to the amount of fuel being pumped in (not throttle position), so under fuelling will just slow the engine.
