2014 Transit Custom - Broken Piston

Postby danrice » Fri Nov 03, 2017 10:28 am

Hi Everyone,

Have had a lease on a 2014 2.2 L2 transit custom since new. On the whole, generally its been great. i do a lot of miles in it and have always had it serviced by Ford, currently at 135K.

A month ago i was rear ended and it was taken away for repair, rear door, rear door post and main sliding door side panel were replaced (over £4K worth of repairs). ever since it came back it was running like a proper old diesel. i noticed the difference straight away, but figured since i had been driving a brand new hire van for 2 weeks that perhaps i was just remembering how it drove through rose tinted specs.

4 days later the engine went pop. took it to Ford and they confirmed that one of the pistons had broken. The normal warranty is 3 years and 100K miles so i was out of that. the garage have spoken to ford and after 2 weeks of wrangling Ford are willing to contribute to the repair. they will contribute 60%, leaving me with a bill for £2.4K. the dealership also warned that the flywheel, and clutch might need doing (due to mileage), another £700. as the problem was a piston, the problem could be an injector, which would also be at my additional cost.

so to sum up, do you guys think that I'm getting a harsh deal, where a £30K van engine dies after 3 years and 6 months still on lease! Am i the only one this has happened to? The dealership have also said that they cannot get hold of these engines at the moment, they currently have 2 engines they are waiting for, that it could be 7+ weeks before i see an engine. i just feel that Ford don't seem to have any sense of urgency, this van is how i earn my living, so it being out for 2 months does not work for me. does this seem fair wear and tear, or is there a fundamental flaw with these vans?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Being totally honest, 60% paid by Ford is way more than I expected you to get, owning modern dieses out of warranty is a mine field, there is a known issue with piston cracking apparently, due to software updates being issued but I haven't see many reported failures.
I hope you can get it sorted ASAP

Bargain, at some point you must become responsible for your own van
3 years warranty is far too long its ready for the scrappi at that age

i'm starting to doubt more and more to get the extra waranty by ford for my van when i read this...

i must may 765€ once , to get 7 year or 140K waranty ...

that is nothing compared to the prices you must pay when someting goes realy wrong!

with the extra waranty i will be safe for my 5 years of leasing !!!

Good move. 8)

Pay the Insurance premium (the cost of extended warranty) & sell it before the premium expires. :D
No Squire, not just any van....it has to be a Mk7 (VM.1) :D

how would the oil pump failing hole a piston :? surely it would seize the engine
