Custom floorpan

Postby conrod » Tue Nov 14, 2017 11:08 am

I read somewhere that the Custom was based on the SWB Mk7 floorpan - anyone know if that is true? Wouldnt mind building a RWD version, with an EB V6, bit like Guy Martins, but for the road. I had a look underneath a friends van today, and the engine bay looks long enough. The Mk7 as most of you know used the same floorpan for FWD and RWD.

Guy had to hack his floor to get the prop and axle in didn't he? And maybe other modifications to angle the engine etc.

Fwd and rwd mk7 are different internal floor heights to account for the prop and and axle.

thanks for that - I did not realise the internal floor heights were different on FWD and RWD Mk7's, but that would make sense. The Custom has leaf springs rear, so easy enough to bolt a rear axle in. Not sure how the floor height would be, looked like it might be a little tight with a diff in there. The fuel tank hangs over the centreline too, so that would have to be modified or replaced.
I watched the video on the build for Guy Martins van, they added rear shock towers, and top link brackets for the rear axle (it was 4 linked with coilovers) and used the original leaf spring mounts for the lower links I think, but I don't remember seeing anything about the floor being cut to clear the prop or axle. Might watch it again! It would be a fun van as a RWD with lots of power. And the EB V6 is a fairly economical thing considering its power output.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a Mk8, which already comes as a RWD :?:

Or am I missing something  :?

I like the smaller size of the Custom, very similar to a Mk1 or Mk2. The "2 ton" full size Transit is too big for my needs. I drove a friends Custom the other day, and think it would be quite good as a daily driver, as well as a work vehicle! And as brains alluded to, it is the better looking van of the pair! :)

Incidentally, the US market has the 3.5 EB engine as an option on the Mk8 full size van. 310hp and 0-60 in 6.8 seconds - not bad for a big van!

Design a whole new body for a custom and then put it on the floor from a trampy old mk6/7 ?
For the sake of a 6x4 bit of tin ?
I read somewhere that if you flock fag ash in your pint you get pissed quicker :P

Fair comment, although I have to say that the Mk8 has grown on me as I see more and more out working :)

They're not all huge vans though, and certainly the SWB low roof is available in America, even if "our" smallest is a MWB Medium roof 8)
