High top conversion on lowtop !

Postby vanvliet » Thu Nov 23, 2017 6:01 pm

Thought that I would pass on this info in case anyone is interested in converting a low roof Custom van to a hightop - possibly as part of a camper conversion ? Looks like this gives significantly more headroom than the standard van and it also comes with roof and side windows . The company doing the work is a well established family firm and I am told that they have a reputation for good honest work. If anyone goes for it then it would be nice to see some pics of the finished job. Remember ,this vehicle would then be over 2 m high so some might find height barriers an issue -
though we are just back from touring Ireland and it was never a problem. I much prefer hightops to folding roofs and the conversion price looks to be about the same if not less. Anyway, here are the details
DRIVELODGE .
Email : james@drivelodge.co.uk
Website: http://www.drivelodge.co.uk
Tel: 01535 637777

The price for a fibreglass high top roof fitted to a Transit Custom SWB is £1,800. This is for the roof fitted to the vehicle in their workshop white, carpet lined including 2 fixed side windows and a 400mmx400mm roof vent ( might even be able to fit a larger one?).
If you would like the roof colour coding it would cost £400 and bed boards ( yes there is room to sleep up there!) cost £240. Prices all include VAT .
The roof conversion process takes around 4-5 days dependant on spec and they are currently taking bookings for February.
To be clear - I have no connection at all with this firm ( and I already have a factory high top! ) however as they are making provision for our vans I reckon they deserve a mention as most similar conversions seem to be for VW!

You mean actual high top roof conversions and not pop top camper roofs?
Ah i see, interesting :-)

Anyway about the high top - - - - The factory one looks far better IMO and is probably the best looking of all of the medium height vans on the market . Not so sure about the rear section profile on the fibreglass one . I had a look on the Wellside Leisure site and I am pretty sure that one of their latest conversions features a non factory high top as it looks higher than mine

If you look in the images above just look where the high top meets the back of the roof.

I don't like that. :-(

Looks like someone left an upturned boat on top of the van...

Yes, that is the area I dislike too. It wouldn't have taken much design flair to make it look a lot better They seem to have much the same look on their other tops I wonder if they ever get any feedback on what people think - - - - and more importantly ,if they act on it . The basic concept seems sound enough

Agreed, especially for the money they charge.
