Handbook says 5w-30....ford say 0w-30?

Postby Rosko9 » Tue Nov 28, 2017 10:53 pm

Hi, got the van(64 reg 2.2) booked in at local garage for oil and filter change...had a bit of oil round bottom of filter and when I cleaned it off it looks like paint on filter is bubbled and may be perforated so not taking any chances and getting it changed.

Garage says they checked with Ford for correct oil and filter using chassis number and they say the oil should be 0w-30, so why does it say 5w-30 in handbook....anyone else had this or used the 0w oil.
Cheers....

0w-30 is correct.
It's an upgrade. When I first changed the oil on my Custom I used 5w-30 then took it in for some work in which they changed the oil and filter. I asked what oil they used and the service technician said 0w-30.
It is more expensive to use the 0w-30, about £20 on top for a complete oil change, if you use Castrol.
The manual says if you can't get the right oil then use the 5w-30, and there is a disclaimer in there saying of the potential consequences of the wrong oil.
I'm using a litre of Castrol 0w-30 to top up with, but the engine keeps using diesel as it's own top up. Not really concerned about that at the moment as my first brand new Transit did the same and this one has only done 6200 miles so far.

Cheers for that, bit of peace of mind really....i wasn't doubting my garage because they're pretty straight up and know they're stuff and were getting the information from the dealer....just making sure Ford hadn't cocked up....wouldnt be like them....eh?.....Thanks.

Had the oil/filter change done and noticed a big difference straight away.....engine is a lot quieter and smoother.
On start up there was usually a bit of a clatter, only way I can describe it....then when pulling away or low down revs after changing gear it sounded tappity ....now all gone....a very happy bunny....well worth the £78....even starting to like the van now!

Is this the same for all transits??
Mine is a 2010 2.2 duratorq, as far as i know its the same engine as the new transits?? And its also says in the book 5w30,
I have Penright full synthetic 5w30 to put in it over Xmas, but will take it back and get 0w30 if i need too, it has done 185xxx k's
Cheers, krem

Hey krem.....couldnt say for sure...my garage ran the chassis/reg number through Ford to get the correct oil and filter as it still has a bit of warranty left.
You could maybe phone a dealer parts dept and give them your reg and ask what oil you need....if it's been changed since handbook then I'd imagine they would tell you.....cheers.

So my take on the oil.

5W-30 oil is Ford spec WSS-M2C913-C & D and is for CVFF engine 2.2l Duratec.

0W-30 oil is Ford spec WSS-M2C950-A and is for the 2.0l YN, YM, YL, Panther engines and newer Ford diesels.

Very similar oils, only the winter (W) viscosity is different. 0W being runnier at colder temps. Pour temp -50 for 0W and -39 for 5W.

I would suggest that the garages will only want to stock the one oil that meets and exceeds the Ford specs for all engines, which is the 0W-30 oil.

Probably the lower cold viscosity spec in the newer engines is to do with meeting fuel emission targets in cold climates. If it is very cold and the engine oil is thicker then the engine runs less efficiently for longer.

Don't think it will make any difference in the UK and using 5W-30 Ford spec WSS-M2C913-C & D in the 2.2 engine is perfectly fine and correct. If you want to pay more 0W-30 you can. If you live some where with very cold winters it might be good. If you have a new 2.0 you must use it for warranty.

Ps. What is much more important for your engine than 0W or 5W is changing the oil at regular intervals and not necessarily waiting for the stupidly long service intervals now specified.

Unfortunately garages will need to stock both viscositys to be doing things correctly.
The 0W-50 does not exceed the previous 5W-30 spec otherwise the previous spec would have been superceeded by a ‘...913-E’ similar to what happened when ‘D’ superceeded ‘C’ when DPF’s appeared.
Basically 2.2 5W30 or 2.0 0W30
