20" Tyres for Tourneo Custom ?

Postby Siclark » Fri Feb 23, 2018 1:50 pm

We currently have 20" Worx Fantom wheels with 255/35/20 102y Haida tyres fitted to our 2015 Tourneo Custom.

They've only covered about 4000 miles and the front tyres are worn out on the inner and outer edges.

What load rating is correct for a long wheelbase Tourneo Custom 9 seater and what tyre size options do we have ?

The weight rating is on your van plate.

Probably more of a tyre pressure issue but there's no way I'd have 20" wheels on a custom, that's just vanity over cost.
18s max, good side wall size and correct pressures for the tyre.

I wouldn't have chosen 20's either but they were put on the van by the garage we bought it from. They do look good though.

Absolutely :-)
Just at a premium.

I wonder if other branded tyres will give better wear? :-)

That's the problem, I can't find any decent branded tyres in this size with a 102 load rating or higher !

The load rating is in the side wall, taller side wall will flex and when the tyre is pressurised ie from bouncing it'll push the sides outwards and force them into the rim more plus the tyre can (to a degree) roll sideways when cornering.

With very low side walls they are so rigid there's not much give so you have to rely on inflated pressure to keep them on and since this is present you get severe corner scrub which fooks them up :-(

You see this when you are installing the tyre on the rim it's ni on impossible :?

And don't get me started on the bmw nuts who install stretched tyres into rims like 5j tyre onto 10j rim

Look at your weight plate and post the axle limits up here and we'll see what you can get away with if possible :-)

(Ps. The above is my opinion)

Checked the weight plate, for the front it's showing 1725kg iirc, the tyres say 850kg limit so 1700kg for the front pair is just under what they need to be. I can't find any tyres in a 255/35/20 with a higher load rating than what we've already got.

Typically go for half axle weight plus 10%

Rear axle is usually higher weight limit so base it on that iirc.

Also consider it being a minibus and your insurance might not have been notified about the wheels and if they are under the legal weight limit etc and an accident happens then the insurance might try and refuse based on it being modified or if not they'll say that the tyres weren't fit for purpose.
(Worst case scenario)

You'll most likely be fine of course but........

Appreciate your comments, told insurance about wheels and also has sport bumpers/rear spoiler I believe and they said aslong as it wasn't made more powerful than standard they weren't concerned with wheels or body mods.

Sounds good :-) every time I all they start rubbing hands together :?

A guy in work bought his van with middle seats in and the insurance wanted 800 more ffs.
Needless to say he flung the seats Lol.

Insurance aside though you'll still want correctly rated tyres for obvious reasons.
I'll be buying 18 inch wheels when I get some money. Not brave enough to go 20 :-(

Who are you insured with?
Some of them are incredibly picky. A couple of firms wouldnt insure a tourneo when I mentioned about removing 2 of the folding removable seats - said it would count as modified!

It's a specialist childminder business insurance company for my partners business.

We had no idea how difficult or expensive insuring a 9 seater was until we'd already bought it !

Tell me about it!
I was all set to buy 1, but ended up with a 6 seater Dciv instead due to the insurance costs

Anyone know if we can go up to 275/40/20 instead of the 255/35/20 currently fitted on the rims ?
