Park pilot malfunction service required

90% of the time when as soon as I put the ignition on my 2014 transit custom limited it comes up on the dash saying ‘Park pilot malfunction service required’. I took it to a ford garage and they said it is the rear outer right hand side parking sensor, so I replaced it and it still hasn’t made any difference, so I checked the wiring back to the controller, so I’m just thinking it could be the controller. But it’s weird how every now and then the parking sensors will work twice then stop for ages! So I’m just wondering if anyone can shed any light on what todo next? Anything said is much appreciated!

Not on a Transit, but I've had this twice on a Ford. Both times, it was the wire to the O/S outer sensor, corroded internally. It looked intact from the outside.

So do a continuity test through the wires from the sensor to the PCM plug?

That's what I did, continuity test, and waggled the wired around. The continuity was intermittent, so I cut out a section of wire and replaced it with a new section

Had time today to check out the wiring, I carried out a continuity test through it and they all worked fine so I went ahead and carried out a load test to be sure using a bulb and a 12v battery to put load down the wires and on this wire the bulb was really dim compared to the others! So I checked along the wiring and found that the wire had rubbed through on the chassis so I replaced the section of wire as you did then plugged it back it back in worked fine! So just a reminder that a continuity test can work if the wire is completely broke but this only had 1 or 2 wires holding it together so it obviously was enough to make the multimeter beep but wasn’t enough to put a signal down the wire to the PCM. I’ve attached a photo of the wire rubbed through.

Yes that's pretty much what mine looked like.

It was a bit of a faff repairing it, as there was not enough length on the wire to pull down and get to with a soldering iron comfortably, but I got there in the end. I ended up with a spare sensor too
