20 inch alloys

Postby jinx » Wed Mar 21, 2018 11:57 pm

I do apologize if this subject has been posted before. I am toying with purchasing some 20 inch Bola 21 alloys and was wondering if anybody was running 20 inch whees and if so do you regret it. My sensible head is thinking 18 inch and my petrolhead is saying 20 . Thanks in advance Chris

There are chaps here running 20’s and there are a few threads discussing the pros and cons.... have a search. The main sticking point is finding a decent tyre with the correct load rating.

My heart wanted 20’s but went with 18’s in the end as I need to drive on site and off road occasionally... with 18’s the handling is hugely improved over the stock 16’s and the ride is not effected... the only thing that really changes is tyre wear. I have to run 55 min on the front and 53 on the rear or the edges scrub out..... I’d imagine you will have to run huge pressures with the reduced tyre wall on the 20’s.

I’m sure someone with 20’s will be along to clarify.

I'm thinking exactly the same.

My will be deliverd with 17inch. Those will be my winter rims and 18 or 20 for the summer. Tyres are a bit difficult in 20 and more expensive.

Thanks for the replies . My petrolhead pea brain overuled and i ordered the 20 inch bolas today and apart from them looking nice i will no doubt regret it once i have hit a few potholes and kissed some kerbs. I went FOR 245 40 20 instead of 255 35 20 to slightly help. On my Merc Vito i had 18 inch staggered AMG and the front tyres would need changing every 3 months as the vito passenger side front tyre wears prematurely on the outside edge leaving 5-6mm on the rest of the tyre. I will have to start going around roundabouts like a snail but cant see that lasting oh well if you see 20 inch used bolas on ebay in the next few months they are probably mine lol

What pressure you run?

My 18 scrub really bad unless they are well over 50 psi..... you won’t find any info on tyre pressures once you go up above 18’s so it will be a balancing act between wear and comfort

I haven't had them yet as they will take a week to arrive, i went for 255 35 after as the load rating was higher than the 245 40's and were a lot cheaper as the latter are not as popular and as i am probably going to start eating them i thought it was wise. i will let you know what pressure is in them when they arrive

Got them on now and i have 45psi in them .I am quite pleasantly surprised with the ride quality as i thought it would be pretty harsh but its fine and improves cornering no end, trying not to take roundabouts too fast to reduce scrubbing , time will tell :)

I have these fitted to my transit custom. They look good but they are like butter when you hit any size pot hole. I am for ever having them balanced.. so I’m now looking for some more 20” to replace them. The best tyres I have found are the 255/35/20 Vredestein suv.
