2016 transit custom 2.0 overheating

Postby R60STE » Sat Jul 07, 2018 2:23 pm

Today without warning my 130ps custom limited overheated, it’s just gone 33k this week and has adblue

It 1st came to my attention when it lost power and went into limp mode. Quickley follows buy an overheat warning on the dash. Pulled over and let it cool down and drove home slowley in limp mode.

Ford assist have been out to it and it has a fault code P0217 over heat.

But they don’t know why. He also mentioned my dpf is at 119% but it won’t let him do a forced regen.

Vans going in on Monday to my local ford.

Anyone seen or heard of anything like this? The aa patrol called another patrol who is ex ford and he thinks head gasket has failed but there doesn’t appear to be any coolant loss of water in the oil.

Having messed around with cars for years there’s a few things which cause over heating, water pump like u suggested, thermostat not working head gasket failed, Causing it to pressurise the coolant system,

I spoke with a ford tech I know and he thinks it’s the dpf that’s blocked causing back pressure and meaning the engine carnt clear the exshaust gas and heat.

I would agree with him but, it doesn’t create that much heat to over heat the engine driving at 25mph at 1500rpm in traffic. And when it’s cooled down it goes back to full power and drives fine.

Do you think it actually overheated? did it throw out some coolant? Maybe it thought it was getting hot?

No it dint throw coolant out cause I stopped driving it. I touched the water pipes and rad and both were very hot and the heaters where burning hot In the cab.

My last landrover did the same thought it was over heating, turned out the gauge went south.

It’s at ford now been looked at.

Ford have been working on it all day and just called me with an update,

They drove the van and it faulted very quickly overheated and shut down, like it did to me,

They thought it was the water pump, there plastic and the inners fall off apparently, thats been removed and is like new, they replaced it and road tested again for it to fault at nealry exsaclty the same place, they have now ordered a new thermostat housing complete with stat and sensors, he’s admitted to me they don’t really know why it’s doing it and are just going to change parts until it’s fixed.

could be a faulty stat. Unusual to fail closed though?
Good luck. Hope its not an epidemic!

Thermostat and or thermostat housing needs changing.
Had the same overheating issue on my 16 plate euro 6 van.
Dealer changed above parts under warranty. said it wasn't the first he had seen.......

Newbie bumping an old thread would you believe!

My work custom is throwing up random overheat warnings, usually in the rain and on the motorway - this is accompanied by the gauge pinned on the end stop, limp mode and a plethora of warning lights.
I believe it's erroneous as the engine isn't overly hot, coolant bang on level and turning it off and on again resets everything.

It's currently waiting for the lease company to get it booked it to a hopefully ford garage.

Mines a '66' plate 2l euro 6 as well....

Hi all, I know this is an old thread but I'm in the same boat with all the same symptoms I have changed the water pump thermostat and housing to no avail any other ideas as it still seems to point to head gasket but I've checked the coolant for gasses and pressure test are OK

I had the same...
it was the thermostat.

Ford now have an updated part, it basically does away with the electronic side (apparently)?

They fitted mine last year and it’s been perfect since. It was infuriating, I nearly moved the van on.... it always occurs under load usually uphill or at motor way speeds. It never happened around town.

Hi everyone,
Been having trouble with my 66 plate euro 6 2.0 lite custom randomly over heating, it generally does it when travelling at around 60 - 70 mph when under load, I've just changed the water pump & I believe looking at paperwork that came with the van the thermostat has been replaced also, Whats strange is the blowers start blowing cold just before it overheats ... any ideas anyone ? Its been suggested it could be the egr valve cooler but don't want to keep throwing money at it Unless I know for definite.. someone pleeeeze pleeeze help
