Cooling Fan comes on seconds after start up from cold

Postby wild camper » Thu Aug 09, 2018 2:46 am

2017 2.0 EcoBlue 130ps
I have this intermittent fault when the cooling fan comes on seconds after a cold start. I want the engine to reach operating temperature and the fan is cooling it down. I mentioned it to the Ford Service Rep. and he booked it in, he wouldn’t give me an early appointment so I could wait but arranged to collect the van and said it may take all day and may have to be kept overnight.
I’ve done a search and it may be simply the A/C distribution position or threads going back years about an incomplete “regen”. Has anyone had this same intermittent fault?
What does the Service Rep. know but is not telling me?
When I reverse the van into the garage I’ve noticed very acrid exhaust fumes, much stronger than previous vehicles, I thought it had something to do with the AdBlue system but this might be related to my cooling fan fault.

Why would the cooling fan coming on stop the engine warming up?
There is a thermostat in the coolant flow that bypasses the radiator when cold.
In the days of belt driven fans, the fan ran all the time.

I wouldn't worry about whether the fan runs or not.

What he said ^^^^^^^^^^

If the AC is on the fan runs pretty much all of the time.
If you have the air flow set to "screen" the AC is on regardless of the on/off AC switch :)

I’d read the comment about the A/C position “dial” being set to windscreen on an earlier thread, so I turned it fully anti-clockwise to “in your face” and it still does it.
It’s an intermittent fault, it went days without doing it, but did it again this afternoon, I hope the Ford Diagnostic Kit can recognise it.
Surely the Ford Service Rep. would know if it was as simple as turning off the A/C to cure it and not incur a lot of cost in having the van collected and returned?
I agree with the earlier post that belt driven fans rotated all the time but there was usually a temperature sensitive coupling that reduced the cooling effect of it was cold.
Electric fans are operated off a thermostat, the idea is that they don’t operate if the engine is cold.
I got off lightly with the comment from bigjohnthomas, he usually uses more acidic witticisms.

Perhaps I should clarify— it does it when the A/C is off. Fan speed dial is fully anti-clockwise to off. air distribution dial is fully anti-clockwise to “in your face”
I don’t think it has anything to do with the A/C.

If it's intermittent then if it doesn't do it at the dealers they won't find it :D

I was relying on the Ford Diagnostic Equipment to be able to pick up fault codes even if it doesn’t do it while the vehicle is with them.
I’m hoping that it does it when it’s cold when it’s collected by the Ford driver.
I might video it (at least I’ll get the sound of it) next time it happens, I could try to attach the video to an email and send it to the Ford Garage in case it doesn’t happen while they have it.

some stuff dosent store fault codes
my inlet sensor kept putting it in limp mode with no code found unless its actually doing it

Doesn't sound like a fault to me.

Why does it matter if the fan comes on?
I think Ford will tell you to hop it.

I’ve put up with this fault for months
I got no joy from the Ford mechanics
In the cold weather it wouldn’t reach a decent temperature after an 11 mile journey
I decided to change the the thermostat myself but found that I can’t just change the thermostat but have to buy a “housing “ c/w thermostat and sensor
It costs £80+, so I’m determined to have it fixed under warranty
I took a photo of the odometer and temperature gauge at the start of a journey and photo after 11 miles and sent it to the service desk
I’ve got it booked in again next week, they want to keep it overnight so arranged a hire van for the period
They say they’re not allowed to order in a new housing before I take it in
I’ve had to fabricate a radiator “muff” to cover the grille to improve the warm up time
The fuel consumption is very poor too
I’ll post here to advise if anything is replaced and any improvement

You can get just the thermostat at most motor factors or eBay for around 12 quid. Might not be genuine ford part but as long as it opens at 88 degrees, I would try that.

Whats the weather where you are living? Wondered about same thing with the fan and Ford service told me: "When AC is on the fan runs allways, until the tempertature drops below +5c (41 Fahrenheit)."

Just ignore my last reply. I just realised you have a euro 6 one, so you are correct you need the whole housing. Good luck getting it sorted anyway.
