Heat Up Time

Postby Ant11 » Thu Nov 09, 2023 4:33 pm

Hi, is an engine heat up time of around 20 minutes while driving normal on a 2020 custom? When the outside temperature is around 9/ 10 C. I thought it seems a bit long, was wondering if any other custom or transit owners have a similar experience. Also checked the coolant level and looks fine in the expansion tank. Thanks.

I quite agree with my 2.2, however I believe there have been some thermostat issues with the 2.0 engine and if so may affect the DPF regeneration.

Ha! I meant to write "while driving on a 2020 custom normal", not "while driving normal on a 2020 custom", thank you for the reply though, its good to hear you think its normal. Although today was even longer at about 25 minutes, which still seems slow for a fairly new vehicle

Thanks for the reply, I may have to look into this as even after 15 minutes of driving today, albeit cold, the temp gauge hadn't moved much, eventually reached temp after about 25 mins. Would you by any chance know if the battery charge could effect the engine heat up time? Thanks again

Do you have a charge issue?

What’s your average mpg my 2.2 mk8 took about 10 minutes to warm up yesterday about two miles through Town on my way to mot when the thermostat went and you warned it up before driving off you could see average fuel consumption readout dropped like a stone

14 reg 2.2
I had to change the thermostat and sender unit (complete unit) as the engine temp was not consistent and taking 20 minutes plus to warm up.
Turned out that the thermostat was jammed open and the sender was knackered as well.
The result?
The van now warms up to full temp in about 5mins. The engine also runs better because the ecu is receiving correct engine temperature data.

2.2 thermostats, sticking open is very common,I’ve never seen one stick shut.

The thermostat on a 2.0 is very different, these can stick closed and cause overheating,I’ve yet to see one stick open.
The whole thermostat and housing has been revised on later 2.0s

There was a message from Ford regarding the extended warm up time on panthers in cold/low ambient temps.
I’ll find the info and post it later.

I noticed a huge difference in heat up time when I changed vans from a 2015 2.2 to a 2021 2.0. Same route to work - old 2.2 van used to be at full temp by the time I hit the motorway (about 8 minutes through towns). The new 2.0 van takes 7 further miles at motorway speed to reach full temp. Now i've moved house and my full commute (12 minutes) is insufficient time to heat the van up. Ford say this is fine.
