Transit Jumbo / XLWB

Hi

We are looking for a project van to be converted into a custom dog/camper. We were looking away from Transits but having looked at a complete shed of a Jumbo a few nights ago it seems they are back on the table so...

Mk5 (is there a Mk6 Jumbo?)
I dont mind some rust and damage however I dont want to be replacing arches and banging out dents more than I have to, it needs to be smart or if damaged, be on parts that are easilly replaced eg doors.

I would like to avoid the 2.5Di unless its the version with glowplugs/flame plug. 2.8TDI would be nice

Tax and Test are not important, it'll be nice if it has some so I can get it home but its not a showstopper if not.

Interior state is wholly irrellevant, it'll be torn out anyway

I can get the preferred van (Iveco) for about £1k so would like under or around that. To pay £1k for a Mk5 it'll need to be good.

Anyone got anything or know of anything

Thanks Notken, I think we'll be saving up for a bit longer, as I said its a tight budget as I need to allow a hell of a lot for the equipping.

don't get one of the old ivecos... they';re horrible to drive.... i think the newer ones started in about 98 ? (total guess)

the new ones are nice


also.... the 2.5di is one of the major selling points of the Mk5.... they're pretty indestructible, really easy to work on, no daft computers etc.. flashing lights at you and putting you in limp mode / not starting because of a loose connection somewhere etc....

you can pick up a good 2nd hand engine for less than £100 then remove an old one and fit the new one in less than a day

if you're worried about power, get a van with a turbo, of get a normal van and fit a turbo engine

The Mk6+ Electronics do worry me, however I have a 2.5di now and I dont want that route again. Yes its a solid engine but Ford apear to have cut costs in places I dont feel they should have, as with all their products. I'd like a cold start system that works and I do know that issues are down to maintainance but while I'll care 100% for it I dont know what previous owners did. Mine has wanted for nothing in the year I've had her and its taken a year and god knows how much money to mitigate the cold start issue.

Also a big - for the Mk5 is she doesnt like the look of them
